Judith Butler.

Fuck me but she has all the rhetorical flair of an academic mortgage agreement, even when she has a good point to make she manages to do it in the most jarring style imaginable. I'm going through Gender Trouble again and have just been struck by how fucking labourious it is to read.

Shit, the ex-girlfriend who made me watch the L-word was a student of Judith Butler and was absolutely obsessed with her and would always babble about how charismatic she was. And then one day I happened to see her as she was walking around town and I was like "that little dude is charismatic?!?!?!"

17 March, 2008 - 07:08

I find it hard to believe she is charismatic, her prose is as flat as a middle aged lesbians shoe collection.

17 March, 2008 - 10:32

She is very charismatic in the flesh -- if you look that much like Michael Douglas, who wouldn't be?

18 March, 2008 - 22:39

gotta agree with revol on this one. sometimes can be interesting, but hard fucking work to get through. Elizabeth Grosz is more cryptic but somehow more palatable and interesting (think of her as a Vaneigem to Butler's Debord neutral ). and she doesn't look like michael douglas, which is a bonus.

19 March, 2008 - 13:13

Butler's "straight" (hoho) philosophical work is a lot less opaque that her stuff on gender. For instance, I wouldn't hesitate recommending chapter 1 of Psychic life of power to someone who wanted an introduction to contemporary readings of Hegel.

she is a bit of a dick though, especially all that shite about sex being already gendered, nah don't entirely buy it, apart from a few weirdo's (and since when did politics and the like have to focus so much on freaks wink) you either have a cock or a fanny, yes gonadal definitions of sex has been historically constructed (and now genetic definitions) but there is no reason for what swings between your leg or not to be already gendered (oh and there goes me making woman 'a lack' of what swings between your legs. roll eyes).

also viva the male universal subject, who gives a fuck about some silly bints irrational emotions. wink

wasn't this what i was saying the other week and you were doing the hippy michael line?
"yeah love I'm like male phenotype but I'm basically a female trapped y'know" wink

nah you just got owned in that argument, cos you shared the same basic misunderstanding as Michael, only on the flipside.

eh not at all you creepy bastard
"yeah we're basically all just like part of a continuum"

xconorx you are making a very basic error here, there is no contradiction between them being on a continium and being freaks, the fact that our lines are essentially arbitrary does not undermine the power of our small minded bigotry and ability to marginalise but on the contrary is precisely a demonstration of it's power.

Actually that can be the abstract for my first entry to The Journal of General Thuggery.

I don't like to consider them as part of a continuum - I don't consider them human

Ahh what happned to to the Ubber PC Vegan sXer I moved in with all those years ago, y'know the guy who got a hard on for Daniel Quinn and was always banging on about the continuum of species?

What you've got to understand is that it's all on a continuum and it is precisely our ability to violently butcher this continuum into various cuts that gives our bigotry and intolerance such strength precisely because it requires nothing so pathetic as a fundamental grounding but is instead self creating. In this sense are the Shankill Butchers not the perfect metaphor or rather the metaphor made real, articulating at once both the serenity and brutality of what it means to be human, the violent rupturing of the universal body that is at once the product and producer of subjectivty.

exactly the phallus is our humanity, in so much as feminists protest it they are indulging in slave morality.

do you need the concept of parody explained to you or maybe have the carbon monoxide levels checked in your house.

20 March, 2008 - 00:52

I think Boul's not the only one that needs the concept pardoy explained to him, I haven't the faintest wink

Why? Is my grammar and spelling so appalling as to make that statement unintelligible to you? No, so I reckon I can't have had my account hacked by bobby then.

And thank you xconorx, you are right I would never, ever, touch anyone in the WSM, not even with GDID's.
