Just went to a bar and MTV was playing and...

...who should appear but every "non-punk" anarcho's favourite Against Me. And not on the punk show or anything, a reggaeton video was on beforehand. Thankfully someone changed the channel midway through.

I think I deserve some credit for saying this band was utterly shit from the fucking gitgo.

27 October, 2007 - 09:41

I think I deserve more cred for not even knowing who the fuck they are wink

27 October, 2007 - 14:24

They're not shit because they're on mtv, or because they beat up their critics. But yeh, you're right.

27 October, 2007 - 18:52

I didn't claim they were shit for being on MTV, although it is rather funny remembering how literally every anarchist I knew for a while would bang on about intimate their sound is and how they used to play in dustbins to 2 people without guitars or something. Now they have a video about some kind of high school formal party, where Against Me corrupt all the jocks in suits and make some beauty queen cry. Now that's anarchist. Admit it, they're fucking emo for kids who think they're too cool for emo.

And Catch I don't believe you.

27 October, 2007 - 18:54

honestly i can't think of the word 'anarchist' now without thinking of that girls aloud publicity photoshoot for he nme. you know where they're all dressed a the sex pistols, can't find the image.

That must have been unbelievably annoying. You should hang out with non-punk anarchists.

27 October, 2007 - 20:16

Unless the criteria for being a punk is liking Against Me, then that's not a valid point. People like John have posted about how much they love this fucking shit.

27 October, 2007 - 20:22

Oh. Well, my nonpunk anarchist friends don't like/know about Against Me so I figured therein lied the problem.

27 October, 2007 - 20:27

i only got to know who Against Me were through guydebordisdead. i don't think i've ever heard more than that starbucks song though.

28 October, 2007 - 00:27

What kind of music is it? (I've deduced that it is punk but what kind of punk?) I've definitely heard of them but know nothing about them. I bet that the reggateon was way better than them though.

28 October, 2007 - 00:39

Nah the reggaeton was some sub-r'n'b shit. I like all the bouncy stuff with basslines the size of a turd of Jimmy Fivebellies that you can hear booming out of Cadillacs on Cuban beaches with beautiful "mamis" leaning on the door.

For the record, they're called "folk punk"...but from what I deduced, they're now basically some sort of indie rock band still living off their "punk" credentials.

Ah come one this "shock horror" about Against Me is a piss poor creature - its old at that - I mean who gives a damn - they wrote some good tunes and that was that. I didn't invest anything in them beyond the enjoyment of tracks about getting pissed on Guiness and some anthem about Seattle and if others did, and had that naivety let down then oh well thats a lesson in how the politics/motive of people you support can change over time.

And its rich for others to laugh at the work some people put into getting gigs and spaces sorted for acts like Against Me, and then to assume the path they eventually took was natural.

I just do not understand why people harp on about shite like Against Me - its like the cultural equivilent of Trots trying to point out a crisis of leadership except one in cultures rather than politics. Where's the analsis of the structires that force this path for a band or is it all the will of the individuals involved or is there not an industry at play behind them?

Against Me are a dozen times better than half that emo MTV drivel so take them on that level, but regaeton is far more fucking interesting than the lot so listen to that and ciritique if you aren't interested in your politics arrving packaged, idealised and formed through some shite bag gang of moany fucking folk punks.

28 October, 2007 - 09:21

It's not about getting pissed on Guinness, it's about Tom's dead grandparents! And their politics were always fucking woeful - few bands politics can be said to have improved when they advocate voting to get out Bush.

They didn't just do some "good tunes". angry

For about 3 years, they were the best band in the world. Their politics were dire, and this period encompasses 1 album and 2 EPs, but this statement is sitll objectively correct. No one really minds that they "sold out" (in their DVD about this, they clearly win against the nobs like Ghost Mice who think it's bad). The problem is that their last 2 albums are fucking shite, and totally different. It's not something to have a go at them about - if they never record another good song, they still deserve to make a living from their music for those 3 amazing records - but it is worthy of complaint, given that their current existance represents the loss to the world of their greatest musical combo.

Fuck I love Against Me!.

28 October, 2007 - 11:28

Well I still listen to Reinventing Axl Rose with some admiration, they remind me of a more punk version of Billy Bragg, but aside the "Baby Im an Anarchist" song, you would be hard pressed to guess their politics.

28 October, 2007 - 12:08

Never heard of 'em sad or should that be smile . But then again the last gig I went to was the Buzzcocks about 5 years ago. eek

29 October, 2007 - 00:43

OK Alan I've heard of them, but don't know what they look like or any of their releases. It's possible I've heard releases and not known it was them of course.

By the way most of what I listen to at the moment is toddler music/video sad I genuinely don't know what the fuck's going on.

To be honest, them being on MTV didn't offend me too much. It was about the fact that their video being some awful sub-emo shite and seeing it on MTV made them topical.

29 October, 2007 - 01:38

Against Me! is and always has been a very good band. The stuff they're putting out now might not be quite as good as Reinventing Axl Rose, but they can still put together a catchy tune. The people who say they don't like them are usually elitist plan-it-x punks who claim that they don't like them because they've 'sold out', but really it's because they can't stand the fact that more than six people are now aware of their existence, because they no longer feel like part of some special secret club when they listen to them now.

Personally, I don't think this band has ever released a bad album and the various EPs and demos they've put out are even better. The Acoustic EP and Stolen Demo are their best material, I reckon.

There's more to it than that, although I agree with your general chastising of punks.

I would also like to repeat for the record that I always fucking hated them from the very first time I heard them. I mean, it's basically acoustic Rise Against. Whenever I hear them I smell squats, Rancid News and the even more rancid frontroom in Jack's old old old house in Colchester.
