Since the Lumière first filmed workers: 1895-1995
Below is a list of films from the book "Desde que los Lumière filmaron a los obreros: el mundo del trabajo en el cine" written by published by Nossa y Jara Editores, S.L. «Madre Tierra» connected to the CNT in Madrid. Edinburgh SolFed have done research on other languages that these films have been translated to and been working on publishing something similar... It's worth mulling this around for discussion to improve it.
Also, see the list of films I've transcribed and adapted to suit english speakers from the pamphlet 'Les anarchistes à l’écran - Anarchists on screen 1901-2003' <Bulletin (Printemps 2004) # 60> written by Marianne Enckell & Eric Jarry, and published by Centre International de Recherches sur l’Anarchisme (CIRA)

Whats the Lumiere?!
The brothers that invented filming equipment. The first films ever produced were of workers
Oh right... so they made all those films?
Or are you just talking about general films about/ containing workers?
Good list btw...
À nous la liberté
That film is great!
Each film has the name of the director listed. The Lumière brothers were basically the first to film workers. Immediately afterwards the use of film in working class social history became increasingly important. The enormous Mayday demonstations of Mayday 1886 were filmed, I haven't seen this footage but I know it exists.
"Desde que los Lumière filmaron a los obreros: el mundo del trabajo en el cine" (Since the Lumière first filmed workers: the world of labour and cinema) was written to commemorate 100 years of working class social history on film.

Jacque

Some good films in that lot...
Modern Times - Chaplin at his anti-capitalist best. The bicycle thief - brilliant. Grapes of Wrath - the ending's much more optimistic than the book. Days of Hope - fantastic TV series set from WW1 to the general strike by Jim Allen, dead revolutionary (how times have changed, that was on at peak viewing time in the 70s and loads of people saw it - they wouldn't put that sort of story even on BBC9 at 3am these days). Salaire de la peur - one of the best films ever! It's a wonderful life - love it and watch it every chrimmie, but it's a bit of an odd choice for the list, dontcha think?
Films that should have been on the list...
Salt of the Earth http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047443/
Love on the Dole
Various of Luis Bunuel's (but maybe he was on there and I missed him)
Didn't see Jean Vigo on the list.
Matewan
Heaven's Gate
There's also a German language version of B.Traven's the Death Ship. BT advised on it, but as I recall, he didn't like the finished product. Also Treasure of the Sierra Madre. There also the spanish language TV series of Rebellion of the Hanged (5 episodes, each an hour and a half long). Superb.
And what about Spartacus?
'Im Spartacus!'
'Nah, fuck off Tony, I'm Spartacus!!!'
And loads more that I can't think of at the minute.
Cheers for the explanation...
What about Loach's The Navigators then? Possibly one of the most boring films i have ever seen... but lots of railway guys in it.
Bread and Roses as well.
Here's an odd one for you. A mate of mine from Iran swore that Norman Wisdom films were banned under the Shah. He reckoned it was because Norman played the working class 'little guy' who usually got his own back against his social 'superiors'.
A purely anarchist film which I didn't see in the list was La Cecilia about a group of italian anarchists who set up their libertarian commune somewhere in Brazil. It's an interesting story based on real events but a bit boring at the same time.

I felt that it would be useful to do a proper study of how many of these films I could find. 'Days of Hope' by Ken Loach is one of the hardest to find. I still haven't seen it

To be honest with you when I was dismissive because of a few films that I don't like. Others were fairly easy to find mostly through comrades in a few countries and browsing the internet.

I'm told that 'Salt of the Earth' was the only film ever blacklisted in the US for it's pro-working class stance. Good movie!
Luis Buñuel films on the list are - 'Los Olvidados' (The young and the damned) (1950) and 'Las Hurdes' (Tierra sin pan) (1933). La Voie lactée (1969); 'L'Âge d'or' and 'Abismos de pasión' aren't on the list because (I think) they're not as relevant.
B Traven's movies -
Bridge in the jungle, The [English]/ Die brücke im dschungel [German]/ Puente en la selva [Spanish] (1970) (Pancho Kohner; B. Traven, story) Drama USA-Mexico Colour-Mono
Canasta de cuentos mexicanos, Una [Spanish]/ Basket of Mexican tales
Macario (Le destin) (1960) (Roberto Gavaldón; B. Traven, story: The third guest; Emilio Carballido) Drama Mexico 90’
Rebelión de los colgados, La [Spanish]/ Rebellion of the hanged [English]/ Revolt of the hanged [English]/ Die rebellion der Gehenkten [German]/ De hängdas revolution [Swedish] (1954) (Alfredo B. Crevenna; Emilio Fernández; John Bright; B. Traven) Drama Mexico 85’
Totenschiff, Das (The ship of the dead; Mutinés du Yorrike) (1959) (Georg Tressler; Hans Jacoby; Werner Jörg Lüddecke; B. Traven ~ Hal Croves ~ Bernard Traven) Drama West Germany-Mexico 97’

I've got a bad copy of a portuguese version with flemish subtitles
Days of Hope - I saw it on telly in the 70s. You used to get a lot of the working class historical fiction in those days e.g. When the boat comes in and Sam. I dunno if it'll ever get to video though. But the book version of Days of Hope can still be picked up second hand - usually found in charity shops.
The thing thing about Salt of the Earth is, it was made by blacklisted writers, film crew, etc. Most of the actors were blacklisted too. One or two of them went on to 'great things' such as... er... The Waltons.
Traven - I'd forgotten about the film version of Bridge in the Jungle. There was also a mexican film version of The White Rose but it was either unfinished or (so the story goes) permanently banned for its criticism of the oil corporations.
La Cecilia I first saw in Italian with French subtitles! Years later, I managed to see it with English subtitles.
Some time ago on here, I also mentioned the Japanese film Eros + Massacre. Made in the 70s, it's about Ito Noe and Osugi Sakae. But I've no idea where it's available from and with English subtitles.

I transcribed and have done some research on the CIRA pamphlet Les anarchistes à l’écran - Anarchists on screen 1901-2003 that includes Eros + Massacre. I'm afraid this is one of the most difficult films to find. I haven't seen it.
I've just asked a comrade in Japan about this film. I'll see if she can bring me a copy when she comes over this summer. Mind you, without English subtitles, I suppose it'd be pretty useless.

Not useless at all - brushing it off because it isn't in english would be like cutting my nose off to spite my face.
Besides, with a bit of encouragment it might be possible to get someone to transcribe films into their original language, from there it can be translated (maybe even to esperanto
) and added as subtitles - I'm told it's actually very easy to add subtitles.

Norman Wisdom was made compulsory viewing in many of the eastern bloc countries, in fact I think hes still very popular in Albania of all places.
Anyway regarding Jacque's list, as anyone thought about at least putting extra info on IMDB, that way others can appreciate trying to find radical films, I have done a pre search for some and they come up as with only the title, but are otherwise blank.
Roma, Citta Aperta should be added, its from the same neo-realist school as Miracle of Milan and the Bicycle Thief.

As is Umberto D.

Whats the Lumiere?!
