He sounds pretty funny.
Most reactionary comment by relative during the holiday season
my gran's usually been in hospital and has something to say about all the foreign nurses who don't speak proper english etc
i seem to remember the xmas after 9/11 my dad said about arabs that 'they just place a lower value on human life than we do'. he's not actually like that, so i'm not sure where that came from
i havent seen my dad with a football since i was about nine, but seeing as he hasnt lived in saudi since i was about two i doubt its because theyve been nicked by miserly arabian men.
he expanded a bit, said how in gibraltar "everyone knows you have to watch the moroccans". it was pointed out that moroccans are not arabian. "yeh but theyre all muslims arent they".
he tells me that i should do more round the house or my partner will leave me. apparently i fail my duty as a woman
Last year my ultra-Catholic grandpa asked if the reason I wasn't making it to church had something to do with all the Catholic churches near where I live being predominately Haitian or Latino congregations. He then offered to make me a list of "white churches" in the city if I was interested. What a guy.

I like your Dad. I'd consider not stealing his football.
My partners grandfather hit a dog in his car a few weeks ago. He's 85 and shouldn't be driving but he figured he was going to go to the insurance comapny. Her uncle suggested that going to the insurers probably wouldn't help him and may just lead to his liscence being taken away. So he's decided to write them a letter requesting that they give him 400$ to pay for the repairs on his vehicle incurred by killing their sons dog.
Classic.

yeah, when i was working in phila i mentioned to the mother that there was a hatian catholic church exactly 1/2 block from where i stayed, and the next nearest catholic church was a solid mile away. "oh that's your church".
Mother comes to stay xmas weekish to see grands etc. As she is pretty disabled she gets porter assistance along with a wheelchair to take her to the taxi-rank. First conversation of the visit went something like this:
M. Well he was a very nice chap wasnt he....
PH. Silence
M. Nice chap wasnt he....
PH. No. I thought he was an idiot (He had just cracked a really crap joke about english/irish/scots/iraqi men - which I acknowledged by staring at him blankly. He proceeded to explain to me that it was a joke. My response, "Oh, right..." then continued silence)
M. Well, I thought he was nice, not your usual type of porter.....
PH. Sorry mother, what do you mean by "usual type" (Here we go again .... glancing at my partner I notice she's already giving me the evil eye)
M. You know....
PH. No? (The evil eye gets more intense)
M. Oh, you know.....
PH. No not really......
M. Well, he was different, porters are usually............
PH. Go on say it....... usually black
M. Well yes, its a job normally done by blacks isnt it?
PH. Aaaaargh...... (kick in the shins and an elbow in the ribs - the evil eye just turned violent
EE. Dont start on your mother again she's only down for a couple of days
I just got to my parent's place last night. My dad and I ended up discussing/arguing about everything from queers in San Francisco dressing up like nuns and getting communion to immigration to the merits and shortcomings of democracy and capitalism. My Dad can be an interesting person to argue with because he tends to take a devil's advocate postion. But occasionally comes out with gems like:
"if some gay guy comes up to me and starts waving his "lifestyle" in my face (cough cough) i'd probably punch him in the face".
Nice Dad..real nice

I would like to nominate my father-in-law. We had the obligatory Kurban Bayram (Festival of the Sacrifice) breakfast this morning. Generally, I try not to say much there as it only makes the whole experience worse, but this one aroused me:
