For instance, this dickhead supply teacher in work. Every time I'm on a break he corners me and starts going on about some church youth group he runs and how I should "drop by some time and jam". Fuck off, just fuck fucking off.

Church youth group + teaching profession = paedo.

Fact.

(That would be one line you could take with him).

I don't think he can actually hear me when I speak. A typical conversation tends to run along the lines of:
Dickhead - "Hi, what's that you're reading"
Me - "Soldiers in Revolt"
Dickhead - "Oh, what's that about?"
Me - "The GI anti-war movement in Vietnam"
Dickhead - "Sounds really interesting"
Me - "Yes, I was enjoying it until about five seconds ago"
Dickhead - "So, you look like you're into music, did I tell you about this church group I run, we have all kind of bands who play music from a Christian perspective, you should come some time"
Me - "I'm an android who was programmed to hate God, I have no soul, please go away"
Dickhead - "Yeah, it's really spiritual, like a big church meeting, only with music and dancing and stuff, I think you'd like it"

One of the best story titles ever from one of the best authors ever - i read him extensively as a kid unlike any of my peers - i am just kinda feeling a TAD validated by the popularity of his stuff now as made into films...tho it is not quite the same as the original books of course.. but still... the sci-fi kid done good.. cool.. everyone secretly loves sci-fi even if they don't admit it - if they deny it then, yes, that is evidence of unwitting dickdom. lol grin

I understand prayer groups are quite good for getting sex, as long as you don't mind sex with, you know, a certain type.

Phillip K. Dick is the nuts cool

Hey, is Through a Scanner Darkly worth bothering with? The film was pretty meh, but it did have Keanu Reeves in it, so it was never going to be brilliant.

It's not so much the fact that he's religious, I've got no personal beef with Godbotherers, as long as they don't bother me. It's more the pushiness of the guy, as if despite repeatedly telling him that I'm not religious, he knows that I'd definately enjoy it, really.

Good god yes, but be prepared to feel like shit for days afterwards. The ending of the film was upbeat in comparison.

Religious people at work do my fucking head in. One of the domestic staff cornered me in the kitchen the other week

Her: So Zoe, are you a baptist?
Me: uh... no I'm not
Her: So what church do you belong to?
Me: Um, uh... I don't go to church actually.
Her: What? You don't go to any church?! Oh, I know, it's because you work on Sundays isn't it
Me: (tempted to cop out here) uh, well actually I never really went to church...
Her: (taking tone of shocked pity) Oh Zoe, but why?!
Me: Well, my parents aren't religious and...
Her: But you could choose to go now, you could go without them!
Me: Yes, uh, I suppose so... (at which point I actually ran out the kitchen)

This is the same woman who walks around with a massive leather-bound bible and loads of weird religious propaganda stuffed into her uniform, and when she's done working she goes and sets up on the table in the TV lounge making notes from her bible, while the patients all watch on in bemusement. I guess she's "setting a good example" or something.

Last Sunday I came into work, to have another domestic staff greet me with "Good morning! You are here early, you have been to church already?!" But then on the plus side we also have a domestic who sits in the staff room with the lights off watching porno on her mobile phone, and makes no attempt to conceal this when anyone else comes in there. But I'll bet she goes to church every week too.

I just thought maybe you would like to come to my bible discussion group, we're gonna make tacos?". And finally I was like, "Tacos...?".

The most dynamic growing religious model in the U.S. is the mega church which does soft organizing that is radically different than the traditional rope you in kind of wierdness religious people do.

They build community and people are attracted to that then move closer to the religion over time. They have a concentric ring structure of involvement. Really very interesting.

I just started Readeing the main book from the inside of their, dare I say it, movement. The Purpose Driven Church: Growth Without Compromising Your Message & Mission by Rick Warren.

I went to a mega church to study the structure and methodology. It was awesome. Rock bands that didn't suck, Starbucks in the lobby, nobody fucking hassling you. The greeters are trained not to put pressure on people. Neighborhood networks and study groups combined with no pressure fun "services" and shit. The organizational model is quite brilliant.

Yeah i agree this is really interesting - i am not that surprised at how much more advanced church recruitment methodology is in the US compared to the UK because the UK is a much smaller and much more secular country - however what annoys me is that this is likely to work simply cos these kinda community services ARE needed and noone else, it seems (with the necessary funding anyhoo ) is able or willing to provide these services without them also having an agenda/axe to grind. Such is community until capital [sighs]..we will just have to continue organising what we can for ourselves..

I may actually be working on a team soon that attempts to integrate the community model of Rick Warren (for example) and the network analysis of Rand (for example) into the labor movement.

Its a good thing everything in the world can't be compared to the few dead leftists people hold up as good or put down as bad.
