oh I also meant to say I'm going to disable the "location" bit in people's profiles for a more networking-based geographical identifier.
Personal profiles and social networking
What does the friends bit do?
well not an awful lot at present. Though you will be able to activate blocks to display your friends' latest posts and things like that. We think we will be able to get it to do more later, and as WetheYouth says, be more like MySpace.
Ok do people want myspacey stuff like favourite bands, favourite films, books, etc.? I thought
I've put in bands for now, and a favourite thinkers/writers section in politics. Would people like separate favourite general/political books sections?
Would people like a list to put in stuff that they hate/dislikes?
We're still working on the group and ex-group membership thing.
But anything else would you like?

Perhaps this rather than a list of bands and films and stuff. So it seems a bit more serious and a bit less like myspace. I know the networking thing is an aim and that it can't simply be a dry political thing but it could easily go too far.
I think with proper formatting the profiles could be good and have as much information as people wanted to put on them. Like Jef - i'd say go with more broad options and maybe have some examples, then people can write what they feel in them. A little about me box would be cool i think.
Perhaps a "favourite political texts" section could be useful- in the long term this could be cross-linked to the library, and you could run short search queries on the most popular and useful texts by pseeing what people (or even groups of people) had in common...
[for those who know what I mean- there is a similar function in karagarga to check what downloaded films people who downloaded a particular film had in common]

That would be awesome might tempt me off myspace for an hour or two. could you make it so we can edit our profiles ourselves?

WTY - go into My Account and click "Edit" - you can do all that shit already!

Yeah rkn I've put examples in most of them, or I've filled in example ones in my profile. There is a general "About me" box already you can do HTML and BBCode in. But yeah they do need formatting nicely, they're too long and narrow right now.
But okay cheers for the feedback, I'll put in a bunch of fields, people can just fill in what they want.

Yeah i saw, gonna copy and paste my shit from my myspace when its comes back to being alive.
John,Wouldn't the obvious thing be to give people the ability to edit their profile page like it was a post in a forum? That way people can put up whatever they want, rather than filling out boxes.
Like it says, you can do whatever you want in BBCode like here, or HTML, in the About me box which is right at the top. The other fields you can leave blank, though they do do things like group people with similar interests together. For example in this page of libcom users who dislike Russell Brand:

Fair enough, John. I just filled out the entries with stupid things anyway.

Can the different tags in the personal and networking be non case sensitive?
they are non case-sensitive i've noticed. still i think for site styling we should request lower case for non-proper nouns (what are they called really? "non-proper nouns" I mean. ...Grace?)

Common nouns.
What do they teach you lot at school nowadays?

Yeah i think likes and dislikes boxes are a good idea. And then people can do their own subheadings of music etc. if they want.
But i have no objections to it being like myspace, its just one part of the site which is optional

Right well some of you will have noticed some of libcom v.4's special features in terms of enlarged personal profiles and social networking.
We are adding and trying out a few new features which should be sorted in the next couple of days, and will then be added to as the site continues to grow.
For a look at the kind of features currently available, like user images, regional and industrial networking, have a look at my profile:
http://libcom.org.uk/user/44
The industrial networking feature is not quite complete yet, and these will be undergoing changes over the next couple of days. Please feel free to mess about with your own profiles, add pictures and text, and let us know what you think of them, or have any other suggestions, please do so here. Some features we will be adding very soon include groupings for people in the same political groups, and a kind of "comrades re-united" for people who might have been in the same groups back in the day.
Enjoy!
