Reds
what is reds? a film perchance?
US film about US radical journalists loosely involved with the IWW, emma goldman, the russian revolution, and the WWI anti-war movement. It has old time wobs and other radicals giving interviews about the people in the film, organizations, events and society in general.
A must see for all IWW members.

Personally I'd rather watch bestiality snuff movies.

was yer dad involved in all of this?
I just watched the new DVD release, first time since it came out.
Its a fairly accurate historical drama regarding two radicals from Portland, one, John Reed, famous for his book, 10 Days that Shook the World and their personal and political development from left-bohemianism towards the Bolsheviks and their disillusionment with the USSR. The drama is interspersed with actual interviews with folks who knew both.
At the time it was quite a couragous movie to make, a cast of thousands epic movie the hight of the Thatcher/Reagan cold war against the USSR. A bunch of the Hollywood left, led by director-writer and star, Warren Beaty stepped up to make a movie that portrayed American radicals of all stripes as sincere if flawed humans, rather than terrorists and daft hippies.
That said,it's looking a bit dated, in that 1980s film way. Not as bad as many of the smash hits of the time, but a bit tired. Not a whole lot of action, but much thoughtful dialogue which explains the politics acurately without preaching or cartoon. No wonder Duke finds it boring ;-P
I think the dialogue is one of the strongest parts of the movie, generally it's well written. I have to admit I -love- John Reed's writing, I honestly think he's one of the better political writers, as far as style goes, of the 20th century. Its a shame no one seems to have the attention span for it, what are you folks going to do after the revolution when I want to force you all to listen to six hours of my speeches in a hot town square?
is this some new edition of the movie with interviews added?
im talking about the two tape VHS version my IWW branch library has. It starts out with a few old timers talking about the old days, politics and Reed. Then it busts into the movie, but in some parts of the movie it will show a part of an interview that pertains to what is going on in the film.
They have extra clips and such from the interviews in the 25th anniversary edition as well as an interview with Warren Beatty where he talks a lot about doing the interviews and the people involved as well why they don't give the names of any of the people or their relation to the characters in the book which is really interesting.

whos seen it?
