My g/f was reppin the internationalism to a lefty mate of hers yesterday whose response was "yeah, but criticising Hamas is like criticising a rape victim for wearing a short skirt."

Then theres an indymedia post asking for a detailed map of Gaza, and the first response was

Quote:
How much would the IDF like a detailed, up to date map of Gaza with local knowledge thrown in?

Bob

Post whats been giving you the lulz/tears combo here!

In response to the liberal drivel - "To Help Palestine, Be Pro-Israel Too" someone retorted; "to Help Molested Children, Be Pro-Pederast Too."

Ohhh another one is a local young Labour party activist calling for Tallaght (southside working class area with some really rough spots he is running for election in) to be twinned with Gaza. No hint of irony.

not the stupidest thing i've seen...

...but the holocaust reference is perplexing me. i'd like to think it's a rejection of hamas' anti-semitism and occasional genocidal rhetoric, but i suspect they're comparing air strikes to systematic industrial extermination neutral

(it's the image from the facebook event for a demo in brighton on sunday)

Killing a baby is no better or worse than killing say a 20 year old male who is physically strong and not engaged in armed resistance. I hate this macho, agist crap tongue

Fucking third worldist idiot (does that person have a trash bag around their face?).

Nationalism gives me a headache, and it drops rockets and bombs on people (probably a much better reason to hate it). angry

we should ask UK Watch if we can add this to the library as well once they've run it - would be a great thing to refer to in an 'about' section somewhere.

i posted on the event wall saying i'd probably be on the demo (well, i might), but didn't understand the holocaust reference. no reply as of yet, but i have got a message signed "long live the resistance" neutral

'yeah we're anti-war, we support this side'
'that'd be pro-war then?'

fucksake.

ok, an explanation: "Israel threatens to unleash 'holocaust' in Gaza" - although the guy actually used the hebrew 'shoah' meaning 'catastrophe' as opposed to the shoah, it was widely reported as 'holocaust' so you can see where people got it, even if they should be a bit more critical and look at what the guy actually said not just take the headline at face value cos it confirms existing beliefs that israel's like the nazis.

stupidest thing I heard about the conflict was actually pro-Israel; some dirtbag pundit guy likened Palestine to a deranged psycho standing outside a decent person's house (Israel) screaming "I'm gonna kill you!". Given this situation, he said, would you employ only one cop to remove the crazy person, which would be proportional, or employ all the possible resources you have against them?

Just to be clear - there is a definite difference here in Hebrew, between shoah (as JK says, catastrophe) and hashoah (literally "the catastrophe", meaning the Nazi holocaust), and to any Hebrew speaker it is obvious what was being referred to here was not a/the holocaust.

but to be fair to the pro-palestine lot, it was widely reported as such. they just accepted it uncritically because it confirmed their existing beliefs that zionism is nazism under the star of david, when Ahmadnijad's 'wipe israel off the map' was met by a string of alternative translations, appeals to context etc. and back it comes again to the jews occupying a special place in the leftist worldview sad

a selection of UK indymedia stupid:

John wrote:
Misha Akbar wrote:
Hamas isn't some lovely peaceful organisation exempt from condemnation, it is Hamas gunmen who killed my Palestinian friends father just because he sympathised with Fatah and the PLO.

To Misha perhaps your friends father was a traitor like Abbas (...) who has racist Laws against non JEWS in Israel?

interesting capitalisation neutral

John wrote:
Well Misha I have friends in Palestine and Lebanon and they tell me of the great amount of charitable work both Hamas and Hezbollah do in the respective countries and they have huge support.
If the muslims choose to live by sharia law then why not!
John wrote:
I have a great deal of respect for Hamas because they are standing upto the criminal zionists.

and then comedy libcom-hating mental Daniel chips in...

daniel wrote:
No one here is supporting Hamas

laugh out loud

all from here

and a 'lil bit of bourgeois ideology hook, line and sinker...

anonymous wrote:
And even as Marxists or Anarchists, we have to support democracy in the first and last instance, even if we're critical of its results ---- and Hamas are a democratically elected government! I am critical of Hamas --- but support the process that brought them to power and defend the society that their victory represents.

from here

and good old latuff wheeling out a definitely not exagerated analogy...

Fuck I hate Latuff. I don't understand why so many people still use his stuff on posters, flyers etc. Actually, maybe I do, but it just depresses/angers me...

Irish platformist last night; critical support for Hamas, or you're a left communist, its the practical thing to do. National liberation always leaves the working class in a better position. Anarkismo statement was not anti-semitic.

I'm sure they're reading this too, so fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

i do wonder when 'our' governments do what every government does in wartime - appeal for national unity, repress dissent, beat the war drums and call for blood sacrifices - anarchists are able to spot this is bad. when a government made up of brown people with AKs does it, it's 'the practical thing to do.'

I could see where confusion might come from when national liberation movements used to pretend to be marxist and you are young and caught up on aesthetics. But fucking hamas? Butt fucking hamas?

This game's too easy, perhaps Indymedia should be declared out of bounds?

Having said that, I liked this gem:

That comparison is being used and also with Greece for some reason for a "Call for International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinians and Greek Anarchists".

There's a shortened text here

but the longer version is here

and on loads of other indymedias

Huh?

The same comparison is made constantly here in the Bay Area as well, by Jews as well as non-Jews.

I've been concentrating on the stupidity in the anti-war milieu and have ignored what utter scumbags like Alan Dershowitz have been coming out with, cheerleading the IDF and excusing the latest atrocities (bombing a UN schol, shelling a shelter the IDF had designated as a safe zone):

Dershowitz wrote:
Every human shield that is killed by Israeli self-defence measures is the responsibility of Hamas, but you wouldn't know that from watching the media coverage.

Though its probably not right to call this kind of stuff "stupidity".

yeah, right-wing warmongering is not very funny at all, just sad, and possibly infuriating. Let's go back to "platformists say the darndest things."
