I saw it. While it was a good film and Daniel Day Lewis gives an incredible performance, I took very little away from it. Nobody left the theater discussing the 'meaning' behind anything...instead it was dead silence.
I do recommend seeing it, and in a theater at that, but don't expect an action packed epic...it's just a drawn-out, highly unsettling character-study of a highly disturbed individual. The elimination of the communist protagonist from the novel leaves the entire experience without any uplifting or inspiring elements--there is no redemption is the world this film presents.
Synopsis: Guy is very mean...is mean to people and it makes them upset...guy doesn't care and continues to be mean...guy gets away with being mean to everyone...roll credits.

Nice synop antieverything, that pretty much covers it.
I do reccomend it as a rental when it comes out. Its a very cool period piece, and that theres the high water mark I recon.

I saw this tonight for valentines day with my girlfriend and we waited for an hour for something to happen and I turned to her and said 'this is boring' and she goes 'thank fuck I thought it was just me'. So we went to the pub and talked about how boring it was.

Hah, me and my ex did the same thing when we saw The Darjeeling Limited a few weeks back...
I haven't seen it but actually have an old hardback copy of "Oil" by Upton Sinclair. I gather from the synopsis I just read that they left out the plot lines about socialism, which makes it somewhat less interesting to me. Hopefully, the sucess of the film will renew interest in Sinclair's work. His politics were at best right social-democrat but he was a fine writer willing to expose the American ruling class as he did in "Oil" and "The Jungle"
