A Dutch TV station says it will go ahead with a programme in which a terminally ill woman selects one of three patients to receive her kidneys.

From the creators of Big Brother, so you know it's gonna be quality.

There isn't much further they can go/lower they can stoop....or if there is.... eek

S'funny but i thought fab 70's dystopian sci-fi films about future deadly entertainment spectacles were a tad exaggerated - mebbe not .. sad (Rollerball, Death Race 2000 etc)

DR 2000 - Fabulous black comedic satire

Rollerball - Fab portrayal of individual v. the State/Private superwealth/power which here are portrayed as one corrupted entity - who would have thought?? wink

They were making a big thing about this on bbc news yesterday. I don't get the issue all that much tbh. Obviously everyone should have equal access to the same standard of medical care, but this program isnt exaberating that, just highlighting the fact that the problem exists.

30 May, 2007 - 18:31

Rkn

I think the issue is that it is not highlighting the issue so much as exploiting the people who are affected by it in order to increase ratings.

People who will prolly die waiting for an organ are given a 33% chance of winning one if they beg hard enough!!

Who gets an organ is a decision best made by the surgical team not by a living donor on live tv...

The donor system works on altruism, not favouritism...

And people watching to see who gets to live and who will most prolly die and being able to have an impact on that decision??

Not that far away from people watching executions imho...

PS Tho at least you are being honest! smile A lot of peeps pretend to give a shit about an issue and they don't..honesty is best.

The thing is that the producers/makers of the show just didn't take it far enough. I mean they are missing out on some serious txt-msg cash. Let the public decide who'll get the organ!!!!! This would be more democratic as well.

Good movie, horrible remake.

Agreed. Tho even a pretty good remake could never capture the essence of the original which was very much a product of its time in style etc even tho its message is even more relevant now.

Those two films together make for a good evenings communal viewing pleasure. cool

I am thinking of starting a thread in Thought soon on a related subject that a certain admin might not like.. black bloc tongue

PS On your more serious point - well, audience participation DID add to the atmosphere in the gladiatorial arenas of Rome or so i have heard. neutral The inability of ancient Romans to develop text messaging services to allow others of its citizens to participate was one of its major failings as a civilization and ultimately led to its downfall. tongue wink

Yeah, the thumb up or down to give/take life in the Colosseum was just too primitive. Though, at least they figured out it has something to do with fingers wink

He is probably impotent roll eyes Therefore that particular organ will be not so much vital as irrelevant. (meow! )

He said that potential donors would have been deterred from agreeing to give up their organs voluntarily because of the crass commercialism shown by the makers.

Mr Statham, who represents 20,000 patients in the UK, said: “I hope Endemol go bankrupt for their disturbing actions.” He added: “These people should realise that if you have kidney failure you will eventually die. The only thing that can temporarily save you is dialysis or a kidney donation. To actually play games with people’s hopes is appalling.”

This seems to imply that the contestants didn't know that it was a hoax. That's pretty fucking sick if that's the case angry

In the slightly different version of the article that appeared in the actual paper it says that the contestants did know she was an actress, but the studio audience didn't
