What is indie music?

So I'm told that it's supposed to mean independent label, and this has become slightly distorted since britpop. But then how come you wouldn't describe something released on a drum n bass as indie?
And how come you seem to get cred for liking "indie", when in my day you were more likely to get laughed at by junglists/etc.? What's changed?
I'm banned from matb and urban so i can't ask there, but thx.

i dont know, it just is. probably because people who dont like guitar based rock indie wanted to distance themselves from it so took other descriptions instead.

so it seems weird to say you hate indie. it's just not a really very hatable genre.

you can't say something is either a or b or c, and therefore if you hate it you hate a and b and c. that doesn't make sense.
like i say i don't think it is hardly ever used to describe independent music. that would be meaningless.
edit: ok i misunderstood what you meant. but for the sake of argument let's say its short for independent rock, a sub-genre of alternative rock or whatever. then what jumped up tosser is going to ridicule me for not being indie, for not liking much alternative rock? it is everywhere, and the attitude is retarded. why is it suddenly fashionable? it's a joke!
