aye.

I'm now 6 episodes into the Shield and it's still a massive let down after watching The Wire.

The Wire is brilliant. Not seen the fourth season yet though, which sucks. Got the fifth to come too.

I think the second and third seasons are probably the best I've seen, and when the first is that dope that's quite a big accomplishment.

Fourth season is good, I think the second is my favourite though. The fifth season starts in a month or two as does the seventh and final season of the shield.

other than that they both feature police and both brilliant, why would you compare the shield to the wire? Both totally different shows. If you're holding the shield against the wire, then you're bound to get disapointed.

Yeah, totally right.
The Wire is incredible, but expansive and multi-tiered in a way that The Shield isn't.
The Shield is fast-paced and adrenaline fuelled in a way that the intricate plots of the Wire can't be- and would be cheapened by.
Both have incredibly three dimensional characters and excellent writing.

Those two are the best things I have ever seen on TV, and indeed are almost what the medium was made to show for me. Deadwood is third.

I have just watched the first season of this. It appeared in our local pirate film shop last week, and after watching it I can understand why it hasn't been on TV here.

My wife was pretty shocked by the language used. Even the subtitles, which used asterisks, and modded a lot of it down carried a warning about the language at the start of each episode, not provided by the state censorships board but by your friendly DVD bootleggers.

It seemed pretty good to me though. I have bought the second series.

Season 2 is my fav, although I haven't watched 5 yet (acquiring it now, actually). 3 is the weakest.

Definitely in my top 5 tv shows of all time.

three is the weakest?

you're kidding surely? that's probably the best series of all. stringer and avon's relationship, the emergence of marlo, the stat game, showing how reform can't work.

series three also has the line "you're harder to get at than my fat wife's cunt, nigga" which alone should make it the best.

Not to mention the best line of the entire series: 'Fuck the bosses!'

The fixation on season 2 makes sense since there's unionists in it and everything but its clearly the slowest paced and least compelling of the first 3 seasons (all I've seen so far). I read that when they rebroadcast it on BET (black entertainment television), the entire docks storyline was edited out!

Season 3 was soooooo badass. Hampsterdam? Come the fuck on! What's not to love?

Season 5 was the weakest, Scott was a crap character although the McNulty storyline was good I thought the focus on the media wasn't really good enough and there seemed to be some obvious score settling by Ed Burn. Omar/marlo story was good, as was prop joe, it was still good, just not quite as good.

Not all of it, but as much as they could without it ceasing to make sense i guess.

I remember reading David Simon saying black guys would come up to him, accusing him of trying to make The Wire "white" after the first series but then returning to black characters after the second series was unsuccessful. To which he simply says "but season 2 was our highest rated season of all". which he also puts down to racism.

so, y'know, if you like season 2 most you're probably racist. just a little note...

Yeah what he said. The whole Hampsterdam thing is so fucking dark and relevant as fuck given recent occurrences in US and Mexico. Season 2's actually pretty slow and rather labouring in comparison to the rest. Plus October Lost hates it cos it's "anti-union". grin
