Social meet up in Lovely Lewisham?

As there appear to be growing numbers of people in the area, might I suggest we have an informal meet-up one night. There clearly isn't an appetite for anything more formal but a swift pint somewhere cheap might go down well.... Who knows I might even be able to get other (relative) veterans along smile (People who remember the day when there were as many Tory MPs in the borough as there are now councillors).

Now I've met Button and rkn before and I know loads of people off list (most of whom won't come).

How about Thursday next week? 3rd November.

There is a Wetherspoons in Lewisham High St. I don't need to say anything about not bringing a sound-system, do I?

Damn, you beat me to it. Was thinking much the same myself, what with all the mentions of Lewisham/Deptford/New X in the General forum.....

Edit: if New X is easier for folks, the Rosemary Branch (near Goldsmiths) is under new management & is quite a decent put with decent-sized tables.

Better than the Marquis, anyway, which is, was & always will be, a shithole.

That's my local!! It is kinda a gay pub. You can play Connect 4 and Scrabble in there.

If it happens there, I'll probably be there anyway but most likely distracted by people from my hall.

The Marquis is alright! I don't even like pubs but at least they show plenty of footy, including the Ireland matches! (pity they didn't qualify sad )

I was in the marquis last night, and the walpole. I don't even drink but I've been in most the pubs round here now, including the amersham arms.

I tend to go to the Rosemary Branch on Tuesdays & Thursdays after meeting the Mrs from work @ Goldsmiths.

na my student days are over, I'm only at goldsmiths one day a week cos I'm a trainee science teacher so spend the rest of the week working in school. I seem to end up in the marquis when football's on as I've no other place to watch matches, but I've been in most other locals with fellow wannabe teachers.

The Marquis used to be a regular haunt of several key SL AFA @-people. Like a lot of London pubs, particularly in areas being gentrified, they concentrate on sport and lager. Real ale attracts the wrong sort apparently. It's a bit of a dive and I haven't been in there in years - used to be quite a hard-man Scot/Irish working class pub.

Outside of New X (Deptford is dead for pubs except the Dog & Bell), there's a Wetherspoons at Brockley X (All the lefty pubs in SE4 are long gone).

Or we could be political and go to the Lord Hood in greenwich (currently fighting eviction)

I'm not down with all this Marquis-bashing. I like that pub. Rosemary Branch is ok but has shite music. The Walpole does nasty food. Wetherspoons in Brockley is ok, not as good as ridiculously named JammCircus which does nice beer in misleadingly plush surroundings. But then I am a yuppie, apparently.

By last night do you mean Thursday night?? If so, then yes. We were playing board games and pool, as if you couldn't tell who the students were hahah. I just found out today all the barstaff are leaving cos they haven't been paid for 4 months by the brewery, which totally sucks. They love us in there and it has a really nice atmosphere.

Apparently the Marquis sucks.

I went to Viva Zapata a couple of weeks ago. It was ok, I wanted tapas though. And the tequila flavoured beer was rough.

EDIT: oh yeah and Brick Lane RULES. I love the hookah bar there.

Seriously, suggest a date for this. What days are good for people??

I can generally get out any night so long as my partner's not already got something arranged. Friday's are generally out for me as I'm too knackered (and I suspect those of you who are either young or don't have to work are out gallivanting anyway smile )

When i started this thread I did suggest Thursday 3rd November. How's that sound?

The following week is more difficult as my other half is out. And then I'm off on hols for 2 weeks.

Well it looks like I'll be out on Thursday, but not in lovely Lewisham. sad

After all the bitching I've done about the Marquis, it looks like I'll be spending (part of) the evening in there instead. *sigh*

Edit: of course, if you decide to make it for the Marquis, I can say, "Oh look, sweetheart, lots of my anarchist chums. No, really -- you stay here & talk about departmental politics. I'll be fine. Honestly." wink

Not the "official" meet-up, but I'll be out in New X this evening -- most likely the Rosemary Branch, from about 6.15/6.30. Just in case anyone feels like saying hello.

This is me (nearly):-

I would, but I already have plans i think. This Thursday is good for me if it's just a couple, cos I REALLY NEED to make it to my lecture 10am on Friday. Of course, if it's next week, I have reading week so...
