Cadiz general strike

Submitted by gatorojinegro on 20 April, 2007 - 17:34.

To correct the news item posted on libcom, I'd point out that the Cadiz general strike was also called by CGT. The news article says the workers at Delphi are represented by the UGT and Workers Commissions but they are also represented by the CGT. The CNT points out that there was a large participation by women, students and the general population of the Cadiz metropolitan area in the general strike. The Delphi plant is located in Puero Real, which is an industrial suburb located across Cadiz bay from the city of Cadiz, which is on the tip of a peninsula (sort of like the geographic relationship of Oakland to San Francisco).

There is an article on this struggle by the CNT at:

http://www.amoryrabia.org/cntvalladolid/article.php3?id_article=368

The article is entitled "Delphi: An example of savage capitalism"

Someone whose castellano is better than mine might translate this. The CNT criticizes the "hypocricy" of the UGT/Workers Commissions but they go out of their way to note they are not criticizing the CGT. They point out that Delphi has a strategy of moving the factory to Poland...presumably to take advantage of lower wages now that Poland is a part of the EU. The article points out that Delphi has also laid off 600 workers at a factory in Tangiers, Morocco, across the straits of Gibraltar from Cadiz.

Looks like I did a pretty poor job with that one. Annoying thing is I'm sure I used at least two articles for info.
I'll have a look at your link (doubt I can read it though) and then I'll try to clean up the article.
Thanks for pointing it out.

gato, did you first read the story here and then check the details or did you know about it already? Because if you do see news like this you can submit articles to the news section very easily and it's appreciated.

no, i saw your piece first, and then i went in search of news on Spanish sites. I usually check a variety of websites in Spain, to find info. I check the CGT website (www.cgt.es) and the CNT-AIT website (www.cnt.es). There are also some independent media sites such as Spanish indymedia, and kaosenlared.org (KAOS radio on the net). also mainstream papers like el pais have websites.

The CGT of Andalucia has a separate website and I recommend taking a look at the article where CGT denounces the UGT and Workers Commission in regard to the Delphi struggle, at:

One of the complaints of the CGT is that the president of the Council of Andalucia (the regional government) met with the leaders of the metal unions of the UGT and Workers Commissions to discuss the "Delphi crisis", but excluded the CGT and the USO (a Christian union). The elimination of 1,600 jobs in Cadiz is a crisis because the region suffers from high unemployment.

The CGT points out that the CGT and USO together had received the votes of 34.7% of the workers in the last union elections (255 voted for CGT, 215 for USO). Thus the representatives of a third of the workers were being excluded from negotiations. The CGT denounced this as an attack on union freedom.

One more point: The CGT says that the reason they are being excluded from the negotations is because they are demanding that a workers assembly be invoked immediately.

jef, unfortunately i'm not actually fluent in Spanish. i studied the language for 3 years in high school many years ago and do an occasional translation of an article, but translating is painfully slow for me, as i need to use a dictionary. i can often get the drift of a piece online, and i find i can understand some sentences easily, but i can't really translate whole articles off the cuff. however, if you want to learn spanish, trying your hand at translating is a good way. i do it to practice my spanish.
