Anyone go on the demo?
yo i was on the demo
i'm the guy with the pink scarf (my half-arsed pink and [lack of] silver outfit) and drum grimmacing in one of the photos. sexy.
it was an okay demo. nothing to write home about, but it seems that the detainees had a pretty crazy time in there. we could hear the noise through the phone that people were talking to them with (note terrible sentence formation there).
i can't work out whether it's a good thing that the detainees are getting anrgy or a bad thing that they're starving themselves!
Its interesting - hunger strikes dont happen that much in uk prisons do they?
yeah, hunger is something people tend to avoid it seems
PARIS, April 18, 2006 (AFP) - More than 130 illegal immigrants being held in a detention centre near Paris went on a hunger strike on Tuesday in protest at their living conditions, a migrant support group said. All but 10 of the 146 inmates at the centre in Vincennes, on the southeast outskirts of Paris, refused to accept food on Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman for the Cimade group.
Most of those detained are originally from Algeria, China, Mali, Romania and Turkey and they are protesting at overcrowding in their rooms, a lack of access to the outside, and a general sense of neglect by French authorities, she said.
The French government recently stepped up its efforts to combat illegal immigration -- with an estimated 200,000 to 400,000 clandestine immigrants already living in the country.
theres a lot of protest going on inside detention centres at the moment. apart from what has appeared in the mainstream media i have heard reports of detainees refusing to leave the exercise yard at Haslar and having to be dispersed by riot trained guards on Monday night. According to detainees many more people than the home office are saying are refusing food. And at Colnbrook, people are packing their bags and heading to reception to demand release.
On the downside I heard from a friend whose just been into Colnbrook thats its really dire there, people refusing food and people with TB, all really hard for people to support through it.
On the upside, people inside detention centres know what is happening outside (the recent upsurge of protest etc) and this is helping strengthen their protests.

good that detainees are showing their anger, bad that people have to adopt such desperate measures to be seen and heard but they are now being heard. we need to keep up the pressure from the outside.
Suicide attempts in ColnbrookMr.Tariq Rashid, Colnbrook,c-wing,ground floor room 2. Has been in immigration detention for 19 months, and 2 weeks. He had begged for an asylum that was refused, and has remained in detention since he has applied for bail, and has gone for bail hearings 4 times, but he was refused them all.
He then begged to be sent back to Iraq and has filled voluntary return forms 10 times, but the home office reply was that his country was too dangerous to remove him to.
