Anne Hubbard has not lost her job, house or savings, and she and her husband have always been conservative with money.

But a few months ago, Ms. Hubbard, a graphic designer in Cambridge, Mass., began having panic attacks over the economy, struggling to breathe and seeing vivid visions of “losing everything,” she said.

She “could not stop reading every single economic report,” was so “sick to my stomach I lost 12 pounds” and “was unable to function,” said Ms. Hubbard, 52, who began, for the first time, taking psychiatric medication and getting therapy.

With economic damage expected to last months or years, such reactions are becoming common, experts say. Anxiety, depression and stress are troubling people everywhere, many not suffering significant economic losses, but worrying they will or simply reacting to pervasive uncertainty.

There were a lot of suicides in the French car industry a couple of years ago and I doubt the trend has reversed. I might start looking this stuff up again in a week or two.

edit: had a little look around. two suicides in french prisons over easter weekend bringing the total for the year to at least 44 prisoners. A guard shot himself the previous weekend while at work, there have been a series of disputes between guards and authorities over staffing and professional support.

The suicide of Dominique Peutevynck in 2004 has officially been recognised as due to work. His depression has been classed as a work-related injury in spite of the effort of EDF (French Electricity company) to prevent this by taking legal action. Peutevynck worked at the nuclear power plant in Chinon.

Apparently Japanese authorities are bracing themselves for an increase in suicides, since the nineties there has been an increasse in suicides in Japan, the total number has remained above 30000 for the last eleven years. In spite of a small drop in suicides last year the suicide rate of 25 per 100000 remains twice the world average. With a 10% increase in unemployment over the last year the suicide rate is expected to rise.
