Employee fraud up by 75%

I have no idea what staff fraud is actually supposed to cover, is it?

* Claiming false expenses
* Ordering fake stuff from mates
* Fingers in the till
* Fake sick days
* Getting around clock in / clock out systems
* Siphoning money into personal bank accounts
* Stealing pens from the office
* Lying on job applications

http://www.cifas.org.uk/default.asp?edit_id=579-73 has more and suggests pretty much all of these.

Either way: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2008/06/30/cnfraud130.xml

we get info from cifas at work, general credit application fraud is up too as more people are missing payments on their debts, fucking up their credit history and so are unable to get more cash legit.

so i get overworked and know i'm going to be suspected of fraud? sad i'm gonna show that to my co-workers as another reason we should all leave on time black bloc

Yeah exactly - many of those "indicators" are, in fact, indicators of a competent employee as well - good relations with suppliers, them only wanting to deal with you etc... talk about no good deed goes unpunished...roll eyes

Plus, yeah, i have been reading how all kinds of fraud will be on the increase.. because of peoples economic desperation...don't suppose we could try and solve the underlying problems instead of being surprised at the resultant consequences... those CIFAS peeps are lame..roll eyes

Amidst all this headline-grabbing scaremongering is the statistic that reported "employee" fraud has rised from 2.5 to 11% of all recognised fraud cases.

Both the CIFAS page and the Telegraph article also firmly put the blame on "Management" and "Senior" or "Key" employees with CIFAS further specifying "Company Owners" and the Telegraph focussing on "Rogue Traders".

So basically having tarred all employees with the same brush, once again, a closer reading reveals fraud as a primarily white collar crime by two expert investigative companies,CIFAS and BDO Stoy Hayward, who have an interest in creating a climate of paranoia to perpetuate their own business interests. Presumably our overworked bosses will just read the headlines and bullet points too... (though it is also of course in their interests as the potentially bigger fraudsters to make examples of the bloke who raids the stationery cupboard).

And of course, as with all crime stats, detection of fraud could simply have improved (or the fraudsters have got worse). Surely successful fraud would not be in the stats.
