Hinkley Point EDF/China Deal?

Submitted by Spikymike on August 13, 2016

What do people make of the sudden government decision to review again the belated sign off of this proposed new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in the UK. There seem to be a host of inter-related and conflicting problems facing the new Tory government in the face of a growing economic crisis and strained relations with both the EU and the USA causing questions to be asked about the previous Osborne/Cameron strategy of advancing a new golden era in UK/China relations?
A useful article on this here:

the expected fall in cost for renewables probably has something to do with it https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/aug/11/solar-and-wind-cheaper-than-new-nuclear-by-the-time-hinkley-is-built

The timing of prosecutions against the Chinese government's/commercial nuclear 'spies' in the USA hints at other issues in the pot as well.

And now it seems that the Hitachi company intends to apply for planning permission to construct a brand new nuclear power station in WYFA on Anglesey, North Wales (to replace the old one) creating more nuclear waste problems and destruction of the countryside. The strategy is clearly to stick with sites of existing nuclear power plants given the majority local opposition to sites anywhere else.

Yea i've read similar stuff to what you''re writing about Spiky. I remember reading there's going to be a new phase of nuclear power stations being built in the UK, even though there's still no safe way of dealing with the radio active waste that lasts for 100,000years.

I'm interested in hearing other ancom's position on nuclear power.

So Hinkley Point deal was signed off in the end but the troubles with EDF and Frances' related reliance on nuclear have not gone away. See here:
