Hungary 56 anniversary

Submitted by catch on 23 October, 2006 - 11:59.

More about it than I expected, big show on Radio 4 etc.

They had police clear the streets of protestors in Hungary before the commemoration could begin - ooh the irony http://libcom.org/news/protests-hit-hungary-1956-events-23102006

Found this video of protests from September:

And this film with some stock footage:

libcom's attention to hungary 1956 is an excellent thing. not much attention paid yet by various governments (like the US'), i wonder why. (i happen to live in a dwindling hungarian neighborhood.)

According to EuroNews riots taking place in the capital today are the work of the far-right.

Noticed some boneheads with the hungarian flags fighting the filth.

And generally a lot of hungarian flags being flown.

I don't think it's only the far-right. Just everybody, the prime minister is celebrating while he is a dictator.
Those riots are against the prime minster.

hmmm.... I'm sure there are a number involved, but they always blame some ideological group in times like this, don't they - they give everybody a target to point their finger at...

I think generally here 'far-right' would refer to nationalists, which demonstrators seem to be. Don't necessarily think they'll all be rightists tho, altho I think it's reasonable to assume that if they think this man is 'doing their country down' etc. then they'll be nationalists.

Far right stormed the TV station building and occupied it for a day or so, got bored then handed the building back over to the cops.

from what i can tell the centre-right fidesz party and various far-right neo-nazis are the main organised political factions involved in the anti-government stuff, but there is fairly widespread working class anger at the millionaire 'socialist' PM's neoliberal policies which is pulling people onto the streets (while the leftists concern themselves with party-politicking). so while the protests are taking on a nationalist form, it isn't a simple case of right-wing demonstrations (the fash have tried to co-opt anti-IMF/WB sentiment into a nationalist framework, but haven't explicitly said a hungarian boss beats a foreign one - because the hated PM is the entreprenerial home-grown boss par excellance!)
