Anybody know anything more about this? Just read this article.

Quote:
``Declare the country a republic state. Kick out the king,'' chanted the estimated 5,000 activists and supporters who marched through the main streets of Katmandu.

It's just a maoist demo - after they ended their guerilla war and entered parliament the maoists agreed to participate in forthcoming elections and to let the Constituent Assembly decide the fate of the monarchy. Since the war's end the maoists have made themselves unpopular by carrying on with their protection rackets extorting payments from businesses and residents, their intimidation of the national press, their role in inter-ethnic conflict in the southern Terai region etc. Much of this is down to the YCL (see article here and other Nepal articles here). The maoist party think they would now do badly in forthcoming elections, so have withdrawn from parliament and are threatening major extra-parliamentary unrest if they don't get the concessions they want. The issue of the monarchy is largely a red herring now anyway, as parliament has already stripped the king of his political and military power, and much of his property and wealth.
