>>The Israeli newspaper Haaretz is reporting that the U.S. has arranged for a charter ship "to carry 325 standard 20-foot containers of what is listed as 'ammunition' on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January." The type and nature of the shipment is described as "pretty rare."

"A senior military analyst in London who declined to be named said that, because of the timing, the shipments could be 'irregular' and linked to the Gaza offensive."

This is the description of the shipment from DEBKAfile:

The US Navy's Military Sealift Command is hiring a merchant ship to carry the arms on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to Israel in mid-to-late January, according to Reuters. A 'hazardous material" designation on the manifest mentions explosive substances and detonators, but no other details. One broker said that the size of a shipment of this kind has not been seen for years. DEBKAfile's military sources note that the Israel's air, ground, tank and sea offensive against Hamas in Gaza entered its 15th day Saturday, Jan. 10.

It is significant that the shipment will take place just days prior to the Obama inauguration. As I have predicted, there is concern regarding emergency resupply to Israel once Obama takes over. This shipment also will raise the cackles of "peace" groups, like the columnist who compared Israel to Auschwitz prison guards.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: The Pentagon is denying that the shipment is related to the Gaza fighting, saying it is for a U.S. stockpile in Israel." (h/t Let's Get It Right). Even if this is true, one of the purposes of the prepositioning of equipment and ammunition in Israel is to make the material available to Israel in time of crisis. Maybe the timing is just a coincidence, but the unusual nature of the consignment raises questions. <<

Someone needs to spread the word to our Greek comrades and find if there is something that can be done.

An account from Athens. I've not had the chance to read it all through but it might be worth tidying up for the library.

As of Tuesday the arms shipment was canceled.[/url

One of the [url=http://yinsurgent.wordpress.com/]better insurrectionist blogs
reports in passing that a Greek soldiers union was founded 12/16, promising to refuse action against civilians. Anyone know details?

A CALL FROM GREECE
for a global day of solidarity actions on January 24th 2009

As a group of people who came from many countries and who took part in the
struggles in Greece over the past weeks, it is now clear to us that there
is no such thing as a “Greek problem”, that the situation that sparked the
intense riots here is the same that the people are facing everywhere
abroad. The murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos on December 6th was not the
source of this conflict, it only opened and made more clear a conflict
that was already ongoing not only here but everywhere around the planet.

In these unstable times, fearing the threat of a deeper, more global
movement of insurrection, the authorities have shown their weaknesses in
their protection of the dominant capitalist order. Through the enforcement
of anti-terrorist measures, tightening of social control, crackdown of
different areas of resistance, mass arrests, targeted assassinations, the
illusion of democracy is falling and the veil of social peace is starting
to burn.

different areas of resistance, mass arrests, targeted assassinations, the
illusion of democracy is falling and the veil of social peace is starting
to burn.

The more the State is taking a defensive stance, the more it is time for
us to stop fearing its retaliation and to go on the offensive. It is not
the time to withdraw into fear, which would lead us further into a
dangerous social peace, but the right time for multiplying the offensives
and intensifying the struggle against capitalism and its State,
coordinated with the revolt that is happening here.

The core of these events being that we are in a state of war, the only way
to get through it is to assume it and to take the offensive even further.
That is why we are calling for a global day of actions on January 24th for
you to carry out and perpetuate the revolt, to increase the instability.
It is NOT a call for you to support the Greek people, but for you to take
action where you are.

The 24th of January will be a day of demonstrations and actions all around
greece in support of the prisoners fell in the hands of the system during
this struggle. Wherever you are, let’s attack this system that is
oppressing us all !

hello,
a little bit about Kuneva.

She is getting a bit better. she can now talk --but not for long-- with the help of a medical machine. She stood on her feet for the first time. She will be needing many many treatments along with many surgeries in the next months. The doctors don't know yet how much of the damage in her internal organs can be repaired. I don't want to go into many details, but apparently that acid continues to destroy tissues for weeks after the first contact.

Psychologically she is in very good shape, very high-spirited (I hope that's the right word).

There was some discussion about a proposal by a leftist party (the coalition of radical left) of her becoming a candidate MEP for the upcoming euro-elections. Kuneva refused, and all discussions stopped abruptly.

She wrote 2 messages:

#1
"I love you so much. Thank you for everything. Don't stop."

#2 (regarding the proposal by the leftists)
"I declare that I will not accept proposals to become a candidate MEP by any party!"

There were various open discussions w/ the participation of workers from PEKOP (Kuneva's trade union). A member of her trade union was saying that
"from now on, we can't take it anymore. For every layoff we'll break stuff". She also said --jokingly-- that when the journalists and politicians asked her to denounce some violent solidarity actions (arsons etc), she just said "well, I didn't do it, so why ask me?"

Also, and this came to me as a surprise, the various extremist/violent solidarity actions were well received by the workers...

The email of her trade union is

pekop1999 [ @ ] gmail [ . ] com

Last but not least, the known bank account is still valid (and financial help is appreciated).
