Opposition to a shipment of arms being offloaded in Durban and transported to Zimbabwe increased on Thursday when South Africa's biggest transport workers' union announced that its members would not unload the ship.

SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) general secretary Randall Howard said: "Satawu does not agree with the position of the South African government not to intervene with this shipment of weapons.

"Our members employed at Durban container terminal will not unload this cargo neither will any of our members in the truck-driving sector move this cargo by road."

Didn't something similar to this happen in France in regards to the war in Viet Nam, where dockworkers simply refused to load resupply ships?

I know that was something French and American intelligence agencies were afraid might happen but I don't think it ever did.
There were other acts of resistance and sabotage. Wikipedia mentions several instances of munitions trains being blocked by communist militants.

Meanwhile, South African dock workers are refusing to unload a shipment of arms from China destined for Zimbabwe.

The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union said it did "not agree with the position of the government not to intervene".

Reports say the Chinese cargo ship An Yue Jiang, anchored off Durban, is carrying 3m rounds of ammunition, 1,500 rocket-propelled grenades and 2,500 mortar rounds.

Does anyone know what the relations of the SACP and COSATU are towards China?

SACP is friendly, COSATU is (obviously) a bit more independent.
