Michael Gavan sacked!
Predictable but disgraceful news from Newham, where Interim Chief Executive, Chris Wood, has sacked UNISON Branch Chair, Michael Gavan, because of his trade union activities.
This is an attack at the heart of our Union - and UNISON needs to do everything we can to get Michael his job back, including all the legal action that can be taken - and support for further strike action by the branch.
Michael has been picked off because he is an effective representative and posed a problem for a Council which wants to privatise more services - in that way he is in a similar position to Karen Reissman, whose UNISON branch have the support of the national union to escalate the strike action already being taken to secure her reinstatement.
Meanwhile, the Fremantle dispute shows what we have to do when services have been privatised.
All of these disputes need our support - and a joint rally has been arranged at the House of Commons on the evening of Tuesday 11 December. Make sure you come along on 11 December and spread the word far and wide. We need to build the profile of all these important disputes.
And send messages of support to Michael Gavan at newham-unison@btconnect.com.

Why's it a surprise that it's a Labour Council? It's not like all the money the unions pay to Labour is actually for anything other than the bureaucracts' careers,

Martin
I cannot believe that Unison are saying they will do everything to support their members when they get sacked for carrying out Union activities, when they are equally guilty of non support of members and blatantly drop them at the last minute or when the going gets tough and their perks are threatened.. Ridiculous! >>> and of course completely contradictory to say one thing and do another.

a labour council as well
