Smoking permits

Quote:
A ban on the sale of cigarettes to anyone who does not pay for a government smoking permit has been proposed by Health England, a ministerial advisory board.

The idea is the brainchild of the board's chairman, Julian Le Grand, who is a professor at the London School of Economics and was Tony Blair's senior health adviser. In a paper being studied by Lord Darzi, the health minister appointed to oversee NHS reform, he says many smokers would be helped to break the habit if they had to make a decision whether to "opt in".

The permit might cost as little as £10, but acquiring it could be made difficult if the forms were sufficiently complex, Le Grand said last night.

Fucking petty, micromanaging pricks. Can't see it actually going through, but the fact that it's being seriously proposed is ludicrous enough.

meh, who cares? i'm glad i quit smoking, it's stupid and it kills you. You know this century it'll kill 1 billion people prematurely?

17 February, 2008 - 23:43

I'd rather they just rounded-up everyone who smokes and shot them.

Seriously though, this permit shit is absolute bollocks. One of the justifications I heard was that it'll stop people buying cigarettes for other people - which doesn't even make sense cos it won't !!!??!?!

Even seriouslier though, after the revolution, our gulags will have a special section where people can go and smoke, but instead of smoking fags, it'll just be a big hole in the ground with a massive tobacco fire and all the smokres can stand around the sides breathing it in.
Occassionally there will accidents where people fall in and burn to death, but that's to be expected and for the addicts it'll be a risk worth taking.

Free smoking. Count me in. cool

18 February, 2008 - 00:37

Oh hell-no it won't be fucking free!!! You'll be making me some shoes or a dvd player should you choose to enter the smoking section.

18 February, 2008 - 01:39

Yeah, but this would be the non-alienated labour in a post-revolutionary society, so it's OK. Unless I'm making PlayStations for Jack, or anything.

18 February, 2008 - 01:48

It will be as alienated as labour can get because basically you'll be giving up all your human rights when you enter the smoking section. You won't even own your own life let alone the product of your labour. In fact, smokers won't even be classed as human.

In that case, I'd have JDMF fighting my corner. cool

Well call me a liberal, but I happen to be of the opinion that grown adults have every right to control what we do and don't do with our own bodies.

yeah I agree. While I certainly would like to shoot everyone that smokes it's their right to do whatever they want to their bodies - of course they'll be informed of the risk that I might shoot them because of it wink

Back on the topic of post-revolution treatment of smokers - if there is a temporary time of scarcity and we we end up rationing resources, smoker will have to give up a proportional amount of their food rations to enter the smoking zone, depending on how much they smoke. Everyone initially would have a basic food ration, but everytime a smoker goes intot he smoking zone they give up some food, so hopefully they'll starve before they get cancer.

Only joking I like all you smokers really.

22 February, 2008 - 16:26

The whole thing has been rightfully called the bully state, it's authoritarian and this guy Le Grand has the nerve to call it libertarian! Anyway People will boycott it ( thats if it ever comes to fruitition), they will only be pushed so far.

I used to like smokers and always tell them i didn't mind them smoking and shit, then the ban came in and i realised how much better everything was without them smoking and how shit they had made everything, and what dickheads they are

22 February, 2008 - 16:47

I went to the Dropkicks gig in Brixton on Saturday and people were smoking joints inside the academy. Which I thought was cool, how they got them in I don't know, I thought it was cool coz I'm a smoker but I'm trying to give up.Whern you think about it is kind of out of order to force people to inhale your smoke but before the ban no one said shit about smoking in public, very rarely anyway.

22 February, 2008 - 16:50

I did get told off once for smoking outside the building I used to work in - by a customer! She thought I should have been hidden out of sight so as not to 'encourage people to smoke', what a load of crap!

22 February, 2008 - 16:53

the only thing i'll say in defence of smokers is that by needing constant breaks at work they give everyone the excuse to have constant breaks. i reckon places that have banned smoking at all on the company grounds (eg hospitals) are just doing it to stop people having so many breaks

Personally, I think this is a large part of this whole anti-smoking kick the government's been on the last few years. Smokers take more breaks and throw more sickies, the CBI doesn't like that and neither does the NHS.

23 February, 2008 - 19:47

I understand all that about the breaks and whatnot, but I mean serious, smoking really is just fucking absolute shit.

I'm not defending it, I know it's a stupid habit. Unfortunately, I'm a stupid person.

26 February, 2008 - 09:51

Stupid habit but hard to stop...
How about allowing people the freedom to commit suicide if they want to, I won't stop them.

Are your politics actually this crude and rubbish?

26 February, 2008 - 12:52

Everybody knows The Man wants you smoke!

Do tell then, why has smoking been banned in public places? Why can't you even have a smoking staff room any more? Benevolant paternalism on the part of the government?

26 February, 2008 - 15:11

Oh wow. They are that crude and rubbish.

26 February, 2008 - 21:16

I don't thinking flames are permitted in this section, GDID.

27 February, 2008 - 00:17

GDID is normally ok - but he has been REALLY moody over the last day or two. sad

My views are similar to Conor's - like smokers, don't like the smoking bit. wink

Steven is being annoyingly hoity-toity - ex-smokers are the most evangelical - i have never smoked and hate the habit but this almost makes me sympathise with them! smile

27 February, 2008 - 00:24

Oh here, I don't like smokers, they're arseholes. And they smell, of smoke, from smoking like.

27 February, 2008 - 22:01

im one of the ex smokers that smokers moan about grin

and im sorry but fuck off smokers. you stink. i mean you smell, really, really bad. when you come in my house or i walk past you in the street, even if you arent smoking, you still stink. and worse, your coats stink of stale ashtrays. you know when youve run out of fags and its been hours and so you go through dirty dog ends and make yourself a gross doggy roll up? well you know how that tastes kind of stale and ashy and horrid? well thats what you smell like.

and yeh, if you want to go and stink up your own personal space then thats your choice, absolutely. but the rest of us shouldnt have to deal with it. god when i was pregnant the most tiny whiff of a lit cigarette used to make me puke, it was horrible. i still heave if i get a lung full.

im also in favour, but a little bit less so, of banning all spray on perfumes from public space. fucking horrible when you get a throat full of some insecure kids perfume as they walk past.

i am so grumpy about this stuff grin embarrassed

27 February, 2008 - 23:02

Brilliant post.
The smell of stale ashtray is the worst shit ever.

28 February, 2008 - 11:11

word to that shit.
