I'm quite certain that this is one of those illuminati/alex jones/colbert report conspiracy things. Is it realistically possible to eliminate the hyper-text transfer protocol????
I'm incredibly skeptical on this.
While the post above is a bit conspiracy-ish it is nevertheless partly true. Net neutrality is a big issue. ISPs and big-media companies do want to commodify the internet. But rather than some internet2 (which would be impossible to get the same user base as the one we have now) they could do preferential bandwidth allocation to viewing specific sites or if you pay for extra speed. And as they basically argue in the video it could also mean a return to closed networks (like AOL) Also DNS could be used for all kinds of cencorship (though this is not controlled by the ISPs).
Also, all these fears are mostly US, and partly Europe, centric. Also, there would be independent ISPs around in Europe and US.
ISP’s have resolved to restrict the Internet to a TV-like subscription model where users will be forced to pay to visit selected corporate websites by 2012, while others will be blocked, according to a leaked report. Despite some people dismissing the story as a hoax, the wider plan to kill the traditional Internet and replace it with a regulated and controlled Internet 2 is manifestly provable.
