The riots in Copenhagen was the culmination of a seven year old conflict after the city of Copenhagen decided to sell the Ungdomshuset (The Youth House) social-center to a rightwing sect.
Ungdomshuset has been a very active social-center since 1982, when it was given to the squatters.
Ungdomshuset has been working for a political solution to the conflict for years, without any results. The guilty party are washing their hands, while they in reality are the ones to blame to the conflict.
An eviction date was set for the 14th of december, that date was later scrapped by request of the police, it has no been postponed untill the cops sees fit to move in - some time in early '07.
The riots that took place yesterday started when the police blocked a demo from Ungdomshuset to Christiania. Enormous amounts of anger was unleashed leading to the biggest riot in Copenhagen since 1993.
A total of 273 people was arrested - the wast majority has been released by now.
lifestylers!!
Two words: Fuck You!
Ungdomshuset is a living entity, the only place in Denmark where anarchism is practiced in praksis. It's an important part of the danish libertarian movement with all it's flaws and merits.
this is pretty big in the german media right now, apparently 20 germans were also arrested. reports also speak of several german neo-nazi's arrested. what in the fuck they were doing there i have no idea...
German comrades was arrested, but there's been no mention of nazis - and I think I would know if there had been any.
biggest reason for arrest seems to be that in denmark it is against the law to mask up in public
The majority of the arrested has been charged with violation of §134 A: Conserning planned violent public disorder (much the same § as was used in Gothenburg after the EU-Summit.
I got drunk in Ungdomshuset once, pretty nice squat.
It's only been a squat since the 14th, it was given to us by the head magistrate of Copenhagen Egon Weidekamp back in 1982.
Been hearing a lot about this of late off several different people. Not really interested in political terms, but I'm visiting a friend in Copenhagen next week so i'm probably gonna check it out anyway. Christiana's interesting enough, if only to construct a valid critique of hippies and drop out anarchoids.
K-Town - I was under the impression that the mental Christian sect were offered twice the amount they bought it for and rejected it? ie their sole motivation is to shut down the social centre.

I'm sure it's a nice place to get drunk and listen to music or maybe even listen to some music. From what I've heard it certainly doesn't put anarchism into practice, it's the tyranny of structurelessness with people packing out meetings to denounce others and everyone outwardly policing each others behaviour.
Nice riot though, very stylish. Bringing autonomen back?
tyranny of structurelessness
Anarchists should get a big spiffy ruber stamp that says that and just go up to all the hippies and life styleists and give a good thump on the fore head with the stamp.
If you type in
Ungdomshuset
in the youtube.com search bar you get alot of video...some crap some not.

Copenhagen, Denmark - Supporters of a squatted youth center fought police in violent street battles after police tried to a halt a protest march against the center's planned eviction. The Ungdomshuset (Youth House) was founded by squatters in 1982 and was granted permission to stay by the City Council. In 2000 the government decided to sell the building to a Christian organization, but has not been able to evict the occupants since.
On Saturday about 1000 protesters convened a 4pm march at the Youth House, which was surrounded by police before leaving the area. Demonstrators responded to the provocation by shooting fireworks and sending a barrage of cobblestones and other missiles at the police. Soon thereafter rioters smashed the windows to dozens of corporate owned storefronts and lit numerous fires in intersections throughout the capital city. Immigrant youth also joined in the riot and took and took advantage of a chance to fight the police.
Some 300 people were arrested, more than half of whom have since been released. At least two people and three riot police officers were seriously injured. One demonstrator had two fingers blown off by a firecracker and another was run over by a police vehicle. The three officers were injured by flying cobblestones. The rioting was the worst the country had seen in at least ten years
Good job although apparently from what people there say riot had been bit too chaotic and 300 arrests is not bad result at all, especially that most of them are free already. They clearly show they are going to defend the house till the end.. And those helmes and ballies bring me back good memories

Jesus guy. It's a bit more than a nice place "to get drunk or maybe even listen to some music".
I mean its hardley social revolution but what apart from social revolution is?
I mean guy, there is a tragectory from your krusty phase to yuor surrent good politics phase. Anarcho-punk for all tis flaws still does have the anarcho prefix and that is more than can be said for most subcultures.
Not that i'm defending people who smell or anything - that's just anti-social.

He's taking the piss. And (although in real life he's lovely) on this website he's always a dick. Nevermind him.
If the cops want to evict ungdomshuset there are a number of rather obvious tactics to use;
1 - Show up early in the morning, you won't find a single europunk ready for battle.
2- Have a touring us crust band play on the other side of town, half the punks will go to the gig. Evict the place.
3- Call their mammies. "He's not an autonome, he's a very naughty boy"
Still good look to them, maybe if they win they might get the urge to be a bit more outward in their politics in future.

All the righteous rage of an ex crustie, fantastic.
See I was never one, so whilst I might slag them and their politics off, I can atleast appreciate their struggle, and let's be honest atleast they are fighting a struggle rooted in their own day to day experiance and desires, which is surely the basis of all revolutionary struggle.
*I'm away off to wash my hands after posting that.
yeah the autonomes kinda seem to articulate a desire for a new way of life, which is quite nice, but their new way of life is a strange mix of lots of people getting really drunk and a few people organising collectively. Well that was KTown anyway, I don't really know about the day-to-day functioning of the house. Great music though.
i was thinking the other day about Ungeren as a concession to the autonomes in a social democratic way, granting the immediate aims of a struggle to prevent it from socialising. It worked I think. But yeah, they want to live in their own way, and aren't afraid to fight for this; good luck.

what they should be doing is refusing to be a man and reconfiguring their patriarchial desires by not eating meat.

Of course it's the righteous rage of an ex-crustie. You however still remain a delicate wall flower flirting with a cleaned up take on their terrible fashion sense.
It's great to see people riot so violently, it would be even better if it was over something more meaningful than a space for punks to remain irrelevant in.

Riots are pretty.

That's how the autonomes have generally been dealt with. Most were eventually legalised/sucked into a relationship with parts of the state bureaucracy while a few of the more radical ones were violently evicted. But in Germany at least a policy of immediate eviction of new squats was implemented sometime in the early 90s I think.
In George Katsiaficas' book on the autonomes, The Subversion of Politics, he says that after some big eviction battle in Germany when most of those arrested were found to be on the dole some politician wanted to stop paying the dole to squatters but a smarter politician responded, "that's the price we pay for keeping them separate from the rest of society". Katsiaficas' Marcusean style theorising is pretty lame but there's a lot of interesting history recounted in his book.
