Unions sign group dismissal plans, protest and blame anarchists
In Sept. the two biggest (of five) unions at H. Cegielski plant in Poznan signed an agreement for the dismissal or early retirement of over 500 workers. The unions OPPZ and Solidarity later both organized demonstrations.
The Solidarity demo was another example of union PR bullshit: throughout the press their was news that this was a demo "in defence of the workplaces". But none of their postulates, which were delivered to the government, protested the dismissals. Indeed, that would be ridiculous considering the fact that they agreed to them. Instead, the union leaders called for better severance pay and "restructuring plans"- whatever that means. (Group dismissals are typical of restructuring plans.)
About 2000 people showed up, most of them professional union activists from Solidarity. There were others too, including an anarchist block. The anarchist block, with some shipyard workers, had a fight with the police. Afterwards, the leader of Solidarity had a great scapegoat to blame the violence on. It's well known that unionists from the shipyards like to burn tires and throw things at demos and typically are much bigger rioters than anarchists, yet the Solidarity leader claimed that anarchists made trouble and even say that the violence was the work of "secret agents".
It was a typical farse from the sell-out union leaders.
