It appears the Zapatistas are gearing up for war

We thank all of those who have, sincerely and honestly, throughout these almost 12 years, supported the civil and peaceful struggle of the zapatista indigenous for the constitutional recognition of indigenous rights and culture.

confused

i thought things we're going better than in the past? I thought the rumours of inter going and playing a friednly football match with the zapatistas was an indication (ok not a reliable one) that things we're simmering down and that the indigenous commnity were receiveing quite wide support.

Does anyone know whats triggered this situation?

Also, when was the last time the EZLN was officially at war with the mexican government?

anyone tempted to be a little Che or George and go and fight?!

Has anyone donated anything to the EZLN or the hospitals in chiapas? Is there some sort of relief fund?

I've done a lot of work in the past with the Irish Mexico Group and we are calling an emergency meeting in Dublin 5 Merrion Row (above the Centra) for 8pm this Thursday.

Right now I'm advertising this but I hope to put some analysis about what may be going on out ASAP

well if it kicks off before the G8 then the US embassy in edinburgh could face stiff competition from the mexicans in the competition to see who can gather the largest collection of half bricks!

Is this the EXLN forseeing political unrest in Mexico over the unusually contested general election 2006 -- and therefore a possible crisis in the ruling class, leading to military force, etc?

Strange that in the full communique the Zaps don't give any reason for doing that. Are we TOTALLY sure this isn't a hoax, or a rogue faction putting out scare stories. It seems to me that suspending radio operations wouldn't be the best thing to do during a conflict...

We've put a feature up on Anarkismo.net with the news we've managed to gather so far and a collection of articles that gives some background as to what is going on. It's at http://www.anarkismo.net/newswire.php?story_id=751

At this stage it would almost be impossible for this to be a hoax - enough time has passed for a counter message to come out. In any case I rather suspect indymedia Chiapas would have hidden it if there was the slightest suspicion it was anything but genuine until it had been confirmed.

We must do something visible in solidarity. I wonder if they are going to go on an offensive?

There are two new communiques on the chiapas website, apparently it's a precautionary measure while they carry out what seem to amount to a referendum within their military forces, as the last time they did so they got attacked by the government.

From the talk of the 'purely indigenous work' that the EZLN has done in the past, and of freeing people from former ties, plus filling in the 'something else', it looks like the EZLN is about to re-constitute itself as a broadly-based movement of oppressed peoples in Mexico, if the current support bases agee.

Even contest the 2006 elections? What's the name of the social democratc party in Mex? I don't think they got a slagging and they usually get at least nominal Zap support...

anyone heard the latest?

I heard that they are planning to branch out into different areas of central/southern america in order to support other similar struggles, is this true and if so arent they falling into the trap that Che did?

Not really, from the tone of the article their expansion mainly consists of an active attempt to build up a network of support with leftists all over Mexico (and internationally), to make it more difficult for the mexican government to attack them without repercussions. It's the smart thing to do, particularly if they want to physically expand later without immediately getting pummelled with heavy weapons.
