TENANT ACTION STOPS SECURITY DEPOSIT THEFT

In the morning of Saturday April 5th, a group of tenants organized with the Seattle Solidarity Network payed a visit to a property manager. Over a month ago, a prospective tenant decided that he did not want to move into the building she was renting in Everett. Unfortunately he had already given her the security deposit. He was couch surfing and needed the $450 back in order to get a new place.

So, last Saturday morning, eight of us crowded onto the front porch of the property manager's large suburban house in Renton. When she answered the door, still in her pink bathrobe, we presented her with a letter demanding the money back within six days, or else... She slammed the door. We were getting ready to escalate our tactics and take action again, when, the money arrived, registered mail, several hours before our deadline.

The housing situation is bad in Seattle. The landlords and their property managers are well-organized. They force all sorts of problems on us just so they can make a little more money. They feel like they can do whatever they want. If working people are willing to stand up to them, and support each other, the can't. We can force our needs on them.

If you have a problem with your landlord or your boss and would like a hand, or if you would like to be involved in actions like these, give the Seattle Solidarity Network a call 206-350-8650. http://www.seasol.net

Isn't this Quint's group which the IP have condemned?

Who's the IP?

Internationalist Perspective (there's a thread about them which discusses this group as well).

Well I don't know that much about them, but they seem considerably saner than the ICC based on what I've seen so far. It'd be nice if the IP discussion could stay on that thread, and the discussion about the tenants group could come over here.

"Considerably saner" means nothing. Libcom's tolerance for and obsession with left communist nutcases is a huge mistake.

Anyway it's not specifically a tenants' group, we've just been mostly contacted by people with housing issues so far. We intend to do similar actions for workplace issues too.
