I heard a while ago there was going to be a newcastle indymedia and 'autonomous social centre' set up. Anyone have any information on this? Is anyone setting this up or has this idea been abandoned?

I'm just interested because I'd be interested in being involved in something like that.

hello there,

I'm not really involved at the moment, more watching and advising from the sidelines at present, but there is still a grouping of people working on setting up a social centre in newcastle - mainly people loosely associated with Why Dont You / TAPP / Green Festival / Dissent, but it's an independent group.

The email list for the social centre is at tyneside_autonomous_social_centre@yahoogroups.co.uk

so I guess you could just email that address and ask to be put on the list. I think they're meeting every couple of weeks or so, and are currently negotiating with the council for a building in leazes park. Be aware that they are 2 years into this project, may well be worth making direct contact with someone first to get a better idea where they're at and how you can fit in / help out best without dragging up old discussions that have already been done to death.

I'll try to remember to drop one of the more active people an email to get them to get in touch with you directly if you're really interested in getting involved.

as for the newcastle indymedia idea, I think that's still a possibility to run out of the social centre once it's up and running, but I'm not aware of anyone actively working on it at the moment - though I could be wrong.
