The Northern Anarchist Network.
The NAN is an informal structure for bringing together anarchists active in the wider left movement: anti-globalisation,peace, environmental, industrial, social fora, anti-gender and race discrimination, civil liberties etc. It organises conferences to discuss common problems about practical things and hear new ideas, not to create a "correct line" to which all must adhere.
In the ten years of our existence NAN groups and supporters were involved in and initiated many campaigns and projects including the anti-Job Seekers Allowance agitation, the Liverpool Dockers dispute, the Tameside Careworkers strike, anti-election and anti-capitalist actions, Piccadilly electricians struggle and others.
Our supporters differ widely in their beliefs. Many would call themselves syndicalists, recognising that such people have always helped other forms of anarchist activity. But we also have supporters who would not accept a label, We are flexible enough to overlap with similar networks that straddle the divide between Marxists and anarchists, inviting such contacts.
Although based in the Manchester area , we welcome being hosted at conferences in other places, by like minded groups where we can discuss common problems, seeking to get ideas and encouragement from each other.
Agenda settings and other details are arranged by host groups- no individual or clique run our gatherings nor can it be said that we have a "machine", just because we have a bit of organisation.

Bazza,
The idea of a NAN "machine" travelling around the country and being hosted by different groups is a good one. In practice it has certainly rejuvenated the outfit.
This stuff about straddling Anarchism and Marxism goes much against NAN's original aim tp provide a network/platform for Anarchists and by Anarchists. Where does it leave those Anarchists who see more dangers than benefits in such a connection? Why should I want to mingle with Marxists? I was once kissed by one and I was ill for a week.
Theoretically Anarchism has also got links with say, classical liberalism and Christianity. So fair do's. Shouldn't we be "straddling" these groups as well?
