Good to meet up with everyone today. Once again a decent turnout from Solfed and AF. Plus nice to meet the Birmingham Wobs. It all helps to make our politics more credible and respected.

I was still a little pissed from that cider we had after the demo on an empty stomach. Somehow it induces daft comments.

12 September, 2007 - 20:44

You cant blame the cider, it was a good turnout from our lot and a decent turnout from the unions,

I am sure most people in Manchester will know now that Karen has been sacked and that her fellow workers in UNISON are on all out strike.

Regular pickets at the Chorlton Office not far from Chorlton Baths 8 am to 10am.

Saturday 24th Nov. 1pm Peace Gardens outside Town Hall. Protest rally.

Public meeting Wed 14th Nov. 7pm Mechanics Institute, Princess Street.

Looks like they will need to extend their action if they are not to be out a long time though?

This group of workers does have some wider media and public support because of the 'freedom of speech' issue, but it is of course more to do with suppressing future opposition to cuts (despite the employers having got most of what they wanted out of the earlier dispute).

SWP and friends will make the most out of this affair but Karen and the other strikers desrve our solidarity and critical support.

Unison NIC stopped any moves to widen the strike to the entire branch of 700, only 150 are on strike. And it is poorly maintained, some have gone into work, the strikers have abandoned the pickets at the MRI as shortage of numbers and are concentrating in Chorlton. Way to go Unison NIC in helping the bosses.

Ill put a full report up soon.

With reps less connected than Karen, Unison has expelled them from the union after they have been suspended from work thus allowing them to be sacked more easily, for similar things.

Still, this is a massive testament to her colleagues who are sacrificing so much to stand up for her and against cuts. The best chance of this winning is if the struggle spreads, and that's what the union is opposing... so good luck to them!
