Anti Cuts Activity, Polish Workers, Defend Council Housing

Submitted by Dave Green on 20 April, 2006 - 17:15.

There will be some anti cuts activity this Saturday morning - contact for details. Also the Anti Cuts Campaign will be meeting this Saturday 22nd at 1.30pm in the Doddridge Centre, St James.

The local campaign to work for improved wages and conditions and to unionise Eastern European Workers needs assistance in translating leaflets and with advice (particularly polish and russian).

Defend Council Housing needs volunteers/supporters to extend the campaign into the neighbouring county after the successful activity locally in forcing the privatisers to back off in the town. We also recently picketed the housing minister when she was shown around the twin towers that were sold off by the local New Labour Apparatchiks for £1. We have now calculated that the Association that bought them will recoup £4.5 million from the sale of the top four floors, get £500,000 a year from the raised rents on the remainder of the flats and now have flats with a capital value of £12.5 million. Meanwhile the housing available for rent has gone down by the 50 flats sold off. The privatisers looked very annoyed and embarrassed as we gave it them through loudhailers but New Labour has no shame.

1. I can do Saturday early afternoon if it's in Northampton. Let me know if that's any use.

2. I've recently made friends with a Polish guy, I'll ask him if he can translate anything.

3. Would be very keen to help with any DCH leafleting, hopefully get some other solfeders and/or blackcurrenters along, although we're all dirty hippies who don't have cars so we'd need you to drive us embarrassed Let me know when would be convenient and I'll try and organise a trip.

He said yes. Bring it round or send it to me anytime (or if you have a good 'rights at work' list I suppose you may as well post it up on here).

How about leafleting libraries this saturday morning? -there was positive response when we did this at Centrall Library a few weeks ago. Could travel to Birmingham for Peugeot demo in afternoon or attend Campaign Against County Council Cuts meeting arranged (provisionally) for Dodderidge Centre. CCC activity has fallen off in the last couple of weeks, needs reviving!. I have offerd to update UNISON leaflet on proposed library cuts - which have subsequently been implemented. - also, drastic additional cuts to mobile library service have been announced this week.

At the County council meeting when planned cuts were announced Norman told Tories they all deserved ASBO orders - i think we should make this official'produce 'most wanted' posters with their photo's -Binley,Harker,Taverner and the rest - and display/circulate in their constituencies!
