Anyone interested in helping to set up a Northampton branch of the CP?

24 October, 2006 - 21:37

Doubtful. grin

I know it's your first post & all, so maybe have a look at the rest of the site. Might change your mind about settiing up a branch of a geriatric Stalin fanclub in your area. wink

Hi

Button, this thread was going great and you ruined it. I think you should apologise.

Lol - and welcome to you too, Button. We'll have you as Branch Sec.

Lovely Lewisham? Now that's a part of Northamptonshire with which I'm not familiar...

In fact I was making only a generic enquiry, not a piece of Stalinist propoganda as you seem to think - I tend to leave that to the very odd and sinister Stalin Society, and the so-called "provisional" CPGB.

After all, any sane person would consider true Stalinism as being not merely a perversion of socialism, but, in effect, a destructive theology, which placed a paranoid dictator over a system that developed under his control, and bore no relationship to the original revolutionary aims of either Marx or Lenin. I certainly have no truck with Stalinism whatsoever.

I am not and never have been a Stalinist - but I have been a pianist, if that's any help?

So why the CP? Well, basically because it is recognised as the one left wing party with the largest number of members (around 900 or so), and a vast number of internationalist links, - I have friends who are comrades in Germany, France and Italy, for example. Thus it is the the one Marxist party with a real network. And anyway, I am made much more in the pattern of my euro-communist comrades. Does that make me an evil Stalinist baby-eating ogre? I don't think so. But geriatric?????

I can see now, Button, that the only good socialist in your eyes is one who is under the age of 20. I should have realised that and made a comradely effort to shut up in my dotage, like a good old 'un.

Hang on. Wasn't Marx 35 when he wrote "The Communist Manifesto" with Engels, and wasn't he 54 when he completed the first volume of "Capital"? So obviously he would be too old in your eyes to be a valid or useful socialist. Let's try again. Gramsci was 35 when he was arrested by Mussolini and 44 when he died, still imprisoned by the Fascist regime, so wasn't he also too old to be a socialist for you? Me? I'm a truly venerable 40, so that makes me about ready to get a bus pass in your eyes, I would guess. Nice to see that the prejudice of ageism is alive and well in this forum Button. Great example of socialist equality being expressed there.

So thanks for the welcome, Button. Glad to see that this forum is not an exclusive oligarchy where only one party line is permitted, and absolutely no discussion or contact between differing socialist viewpoints is to be permitted or tolerated. Good to see that prejudice is never allowed to rear its ugly head in these web pages. And good to see that all strands of socialism are welcomed here.

Or am I too elderly to understand you youngsters aright....?

25 October, 2006 - 08:31

it's not your age it't your leninism. call it a party line of you like, so we can laugh at the irony. you do realise libcom stands for libertarian communist right, like the thousands killed by lenin and the bolsheviks?

(plus i don't think button's a spring chicken himself wink)

where did you get this bizarre idea mate?

this is a forum and community for libertarian communists/anarchists, you know, the folk who want socialism with freedom & freedom with socialism and who wont send tanks to surpress workers uprisings?

25 October, 2006 - 09:03

marx was 25 when he wrote the Communist Manifesto, you'd think someone looking to set up a Communist Party would know that, no?

25 October, 2006 - 09:38

Not that I want to gatecrash the Northampton Socialist Forum or anything, but...

Because then it'd be too much like the Communist Party, and we would all have to be sent to the gulags for treading on the CP's turf? wink

Seriously, you should probably read this:

In fact, we were both wrong - Marx was born in 1818 (I mistakenly retrieved 1813 from the dregs of my memory, but just checking for accuracy, I find 1818 is the commonly given date). The "Communist Manifesto" was written in 1848, therefore, a simple subtraction of the first date from the second gives us an age of 30. Looks like I was closer to his age than you.

But apologies for being 5 years out.

Or 30. (TF does maths! Reel in amazement)

edit - didn't even need me to point it out.

25 October, 2006 - 10:09

heh. I think it was also written a year before it was published in 1848. Making him 29.

EDIT: Ha! He just changed it to 30, and now the last line ("Looks like I was closer to his age than you.") should probably read: Looks like you are closer to his age than I am! wink

Actually it was ghost written by a much older dude.

"Spectre-written," surely.

I know some polish libertarians who would send you to the gulag for a bolshy remark like that.

Libertarian + Communism = Libcom

As for your remark about the CP having 900 members, where are they? I imagine most of them would be ready to shuffle off this mortal coil any moment now. Is the british CP not also split into around 899 factions too? CP, CPGB, CPB..
Leave the dead hand of the past behind you comrade.

In terms of paper members (ie 98% of their membership) it might even be higher.

Nah CP and the CPB are the same. CPGB are effectively totally separate - some of them just used to be in the old CPGB and kept the name. The circa-1000 figure is just for CPB tho.

To be fair the OP was posted on the Northampton Socialist Forum which I presume is for all socialists. Still the chances of getting a positive response is very slim indeed.

Oh come on that is fantastic! I popped home from work for a quick lunch; feeling crap and depressed; contemplating a life of crime as a way out of all this shit, and PK comes on here with the funniest line I've read in ages. In fact, I have to say I am interested in setting up a branch of the CP in Northampton, it would be a blast! I don't live anywhere near Northampton of course, but hey let's not let stand in the way of good comedy!

I am guessing that anyone who can come up with such comic gems is quite used to talking to himself; which would be a good thing at the meetings to discuss the imminent creation of the Northampton Soviet! Keep taking the pills Peter.

You know what's even funnier? The member of Class War Federation who calls it "limp com". I tell you, it gets a laugh every single time.

Ho ho ho. I don't think I've met her. You've got to admit though, there are a lot of anarchists into "social issues" and stuff aren't there.

actually, I've been thinking about this, and I can't think of many non-social issues - other than perhaps masturbation and picking your nose - are these the kind of "stunts" you're championing?

This is clear. One of the many ways in which we have opposing political views. Luckily enough, my analysis pays off for me. I can only hope yours does the same for you. I suggest if you wish to engage me personally, you do it somewhere more appropriate.

to be honest, I have no further points to add, so no point in setting up a new thread.

I will repeat my same point, though, just to see if you have anything further to add.

All activity is social other than masturbating and picking your nose, whether you accept that in your own personal analysis, or not.
