Hi Peter, I am actually from Northampton but I'm afraid I don't want to join the CP!

If you come along to one of the Socialist Forum meetings it's possible that you might find someone who is interested, I don't think anyone who uses this site will be though.

The forum was originally set up partly as a reaction against strict 'party lines' and so the tone is normally fairly libertarian, however we do have Leninists and Trots who come along and participate in our meetings and activities, and obviously the fact that they do this shows that they are prepared to participate in an organisation that tolerates debate etc so it's all good (though it suggests to me that they're not very good Bolsheviks! wink).

We'll put the next meeting up here when it's decided, PM me if you're interested in any other activities, the main one at the moment is opposing cuts and sell offs in the local health and social care services.

Cheers, Nick

Hi Nicola, welcome aboard.

You might want to break up your e-mail address (by substituting the @ sign for [at]), otherwise you'll get spammed to hell.

bet the CP want to keep the existing police structure as well, like the almost every other leninist group (ironically, i learnt that after i left some trot shower).

i doubt that the CP could ever have a large, or even small group in northampton. as for the 900 members, i bet they include the ever-shrinking pool of subscribers to the Morning Star, as the Swaps do for people who sign their petitions

I know there is pleanty of good reason to shit on the Communist Party, but once apon a time I tried to join my local communist Party, cause I was a communist, and didnt know there was more than one, or what the differences between them might have been.

So point being mabey you folks could have been a bit more open and engaging instead of just going off at the guy, its like walking into someones house for the first time and getting attacjed cause you through your jacket on the hanger instead off putting it away behind a door in the closet.

We might actually reach more people if we were a bit more constructive, I mean its your country so whatever, just a thought...

I agree with you rebelworker, why not engage Peter in discussion and find out what he thinks. As he said he only posted because he had seen the Northampton Socialist Forum, not to annoy anyone.

rebelworker, nothing very nasty was thrown at Peter; at least nothing that a Leninist strolling into a room full of anarchists shouldn't expect! If this guy is interested in anarchism he might have taken the hint and looked about here for a little while.

ernie: your palpable lack of a sense of humour stinks!

Why the fuck should anyone of an anarchist persuasion show any undue respect for someone looking to set up a branch of the Communist Party? How should we react if someone comes along wanting to recruit for a fascist group or a Stalinist group? They're all the fucking same to me, and I imagine that the inside of a cell door looks pretty much the same whether a state calls itself one or the other.

Blacknred Ned, I do not think my sense of humour stinks, but hay that is a matter of opinion.
The point I was trying to make was would it not be worth at least trying to see if there was may be some form of questioning or doubt about his Stalinism? How do you know he was a Stalinist?
The response to this guy is an example of what can put people off about this forum: if your 'face doesn't fit' some people think you are fair game. That is fair enough position if your want to see the forum as some form of club, but not really very helpful if the aim of the forum is to develop clarification through discussion.
And before you ask, yes I would try to discuss with a Fascist or a Stalinist in order to see what motivated their siding with these ideologies. If they kick the shit out of me I think that would imply they were not too interested in discussing the finer points of ideological domination.

Ernie, grin

I stand by what I said about the reception he received not being too harsh & I didn't say that he was a Stalinist.

wow nedddie,

its posiible that people could hav eother ideas than ours and still be debated with as human beings. i have all sorts of friends with sketchy politics, hell my politics used to be hella sketchy (mabey they still are?) The first time I met anarchists they were a bunch of knee jerk reactionaries with fairly shit politics. So i joined a swp offshoot, after getting only the answering machine at the good old CP office.

Why did I do this you ask? cause I was angry, a communists (though i wasnt really sure what that meant) and beleived in revolution.

Eventually i figured out what was what and got my shit togeather (thank good nefac came around otherwise i probably would have given up by now) and settled on libcom type politics. If I would have continued to meet insulting anarchists I wouldnt have bothered and gone on to join the rest of the working class in slow self destruct.

Yeah but Rebelworker as I've said nothing very nasty was said to Peter.

I must say that a simple "what do you anarchists think about....?" would have been a better approach for Peter to take.

You'll just have to take my word for it that I am not an "insulting anarchist" most of the time & have spent plenty of time in the company of politcos as opposed to anti-politicos.

Fortunately the adherents of the old left behemoths are becoming so rare these days that my attitude to them is hardly an issue. Good the World's a better place without them!..... whoops, is that insulting?

If someone came on Libcom and asked if anyone was interested in setting up a branch of some other political party than the CP what reaction do you think they would get? From a personal point of view I don't have a scrap of respect for the authoritarian socialist position in any of its manifestations; I suspect more anarchists have been killed by people carrying a CP card than by fascists... whoops, is that insulting?

The CPB is not stalinist, though I suspect it probably still has some dyed in the wool tankies in it. The CPGB however is far from stalinist. So which CP was this Peter Kalve after setting up? Does it even matter?

Anyway, I'm on the side of the humourless buggers.

the idea of of calling Libcom Libcom, and the Northampton Socialist Forum the Northampton Socialist Forum, may be to aid in the engagement with the (many?) self-defined parts of the revolutionary/workers' movement. That I feel would be a good thing.

Perhaps the OP could post to tell the rest of us why he thinks a CP(B? GB?) branch in Northants would be a good idea.

{I have heavily edited this post as the original was a bit of a bad-tempereds rant. Apologies.}
