Our friend Djillali or J.P. as a lot of us know him, was detained for over 34 hours at Norwich Police station before being transferred to Harmondsworth Detention Centre. During that time neither he nor his friends were informed the reason why he was being detained

He was born in Paris of Algerian parents and has been living in the

UK as a valuable member of the community since 1993. He has been a

postal worker, is a skilled musician and more recently spent a lot of time caring for his ill wife, Doreen, prior to her death. Djillali has established a wide circle of friends in Norwich and wants to continue to live in the UK, which he considers his home.

After the death of his wife and partner for four years, his right to remain was challenged by the authorities. He is now fighting the threat of removal to Algeria.

Surely if he was born in Paris, he can get French citizenship, in which case he can live wherever he wants in the EU?

One would have thought so. He never registered for French nationalisation, not that I would have thought that that mattered being born in Paris, but it seems his recent brush with the law while Doreen was dying, is at the heart of the matter.

It's probably also worth mentioning that he's a Berber and Algeria has a history of repression of the Berber people.

I've known JP well (and knew Doreen well) for about 10 years. Never knew his name was Djillali or that he was a Berber.

Weird to find out all these details from others and reading leaflets after the blokes been kidnapped by the state.

Last night, at the bookfair meeting, I found out he'd been deported, which was annoying, because I'd just spent the ABC meeting writing to him.

Apparently the campaign is still going; they're trying to get him sent back now.
