Pensioner Poverty Pamphlet Intro:

Submitted by rich on 4 December, 2006 - 02:41.

Here is a rough draft: suggestions and changes, please!

Every year in excess of £2.5 billion worth of benefits is left unclaimed by over 60s. In Norwich alone, there are an estimated 4,000 or more people who could claim Pension Credit and don't (and there are other benefits available). This pamphlet was made with the intention of encouraging you to claim the benefits that are rightfully yours.

We include information about charities which can help over 60s - however, we can't and mustn't rely on charities for addressing society's problems. Community based activities can offer much more effective support than a charity can. If a neighbour will offer the use of a phone to ring a freephone number (like many of the numbers in this guide), or will pick up shopping for a neighbour, or just put through a card at Christmas with contact numbers if they should need help, these things can all add immeasurably to the quality of life to over 60s.

This is very rough, so you don't have to stick to this in any way. And PLEASE suggest changes quickly, (don't deliberate too much), because we're operating to a deadline. In terms of word limits - about the same number of word or maybe up to a half more.

Maybe something about winter deaths

"According to the Office for National Statistics, more than 25,000 people died in England and Wales last winter as a direct result of cold weather and the illnesses that accompany it. 90% of these are people over 65 years of age."
To stress the importance of the pamphlet information. Although its a bit morbid, obviously. It would be hard fitting that in without it looking like "read this pamphlet or die".

I think go with whatever - hough I think that 25k deaths is more for the press release and general campaign. I think its best not to scare people... Not sure really.

Maybe something about why it was started, a personal account. "we decided to put this pamphlet together because............." I dont know, ive not really been involved. Otherwise it doesnt need much introducing. I'll put in whatevers decided but im not up to writing it, trying to crack on with rousseau.

I think the main purpose of the intro is to encourage people to claim or pass the info on to someone else. Perhaps we are better off without it? Chances are people who are not over 60 will also read the intro...

In the meantime I propose:

This leaflet is being printed and distributed as part of the End Fuel Poverty campaign - while fuel poverty doesn't exclusively affect over 60s, they are most vulnerable to its effects. Please read this and claim whatever benefits apply, or pass it on to someone who may be helped by it.

Comments welcome - you don't have to be a Norwich Anarchist to give your feedback!

I think it's good. Ive tried it out on publisher and it fits perfectly in size 12 with gaps between paragraphs.

yup, i really like it.

i agree the 'death' figures are probably more for the press release than for the pamphlet, considering its audience....

i especially like the 'todays pensioners yesterdays workers' part smile

right on!

sorry i havent been able to assist with editing. i will probably be fairly useless until me exams finish next week, though will do what i can!

Updated for grammar

Every year more than 2.5 billion pounds' worth of benefits
are left unclaimed by over 60s. In Norwich alone, it is
estimated that 4,000 or more people, who could claim
Pension Credit, don't. (There are other benefits available
too). This pamphlet was written to encourage you to claim
the benefits that are rightfully yours.

We include information about charities which can help over
60s - however, we can't and mustn't rely on charities for
addressing society's problems. Community-based activities
can offer much more effective support than a charity can.
If a neighbour offers the use of a phone to ring a
freephone number, or picks up shopping for a neighbour, or
just puts through a card at Christmas with contact numbers
- these things can all add immeasurably to the quality of
life to over 60s.

Today's pensioners are yesterdays' workers - they built the
houses we live in, raised us, fed us - and deserve to
retire beyond the reaches of poverty. This leaflet is being
printed and distributed as part of the End Fuel Poverty
campaign. While fuel poverty doesn't only affect over 60s,
they are the most vulnerable to its effects. Please read
this and claim whatever benefits you can, or pass it on to
someone who may be helped by it.
