We had a film showing and dinner at Turnstyle. There is something at The Paddo Workers' Club Saturday afternoon and the union rally Monday

Adelaide union rally was hilarious.
SA unions had organised some horrible country band to play from the back of a truck at the very front of the march.. It was gold.
Country - the music of the social revolution.

Country? Horrible!
Last time I went they had some awesome 80's style power-rock 'working class' band. You know the sort of band whose songs all sound like football anthems.

The Sydney May Day rally was, I heard, led by the USU contingent (United Services Union or somesuch), because one of their Sydney delegates lent a Clydesdale horse to lead the parade wearing a sash.
Ps I like much country music. Though it's not really the parade-leading stuff.
Also, speaking of 'working class' rock bands: a friend swears that Cold Chisel's "Flame Trees" makes reference to the Wollongong Out Of Workers Union of the 1980s.

Over this side of the Tasman:
Auckland had a march of 200-300 people, about half Tamils, the rest socialists, anarchists and unionists. Crap speeches as usual.
Wellington had a function for the launch of the Unite union's campaign for a citizen's initiated referendum on the minimum wage. About 50 people, mostly an excuse for lefties to have a few drinks, socialise and gossip.
Blackball (a tiny town of under 500 people) had their annual May Day celebration - Blackball is a traditional centre of working class radicalism (from the local miners), and has a wicked history. This year was a forum discussion on neoliberalism and which way forward for the workers movement.
AWSM members were at all 3, so there'll be a more detailed report in the next issue of Solidarity (hopefully out this weekend).
