Couriers union and Bash The Fash - donations please for online publishing

Pledged so far - £40

The Kate Sharpley Library has given us permission to put their excellent pamphlet The Couriers Are Revolting: A history of the Despatch Industry Workers Union, 1989-1992, which we have scanned, online. The DIWU was an attempt at a self-organised rank and file union, and the pamphlet helped inspire McDonalds Workers Resistance.

The KSL sells the pamphlet as well, and so it is possible that hosting it here could reduce its sales. It uses its income amongst other things to get more rare texts, translations and to look after its anarchist archive.

So we thought it would be a good idea to solicit for donations to thank KSL for its texts and possibly make up for any losses that could be incurred to help them carry on their valuable work.

Donations can be given direct to us via the details on our donate page ( http://libcom.org/notes/donate ) or you can email the KSL via their website www.katesharpleylibrary.net to get donation details direct to them - or buy a copy of the pamphlet. In any case if you are going to send them something please pledge it on here first, so we can see if online publishing with donations can be as viable as print publishing.

I will start the ball rolling personally with a tenner.

(This post isn't solicited by the KSL in any way, and they didn't say we had to give them money, we at libcom just thought it would be a good idea.)

I'd also like to donate a tenner.

Thanks to KSL for seeing the light!

This text is now online here:
The couriers are revolting! The Despatch Industry Workers Union, 1989-1992

Here's one former member's summary of it:

Quote:
Belonging to the DIWU was a great experience although there were numerous disappointments along the way. We tried as hard as we possibly could to create a spirit of rebelliousness and unionise this industry. You struggle to be optimistic and enthusiastic but eventually you think bollocks to it all. You need a break. Make up your own mind whether we succeeded or not. Learn from our mistakes, get together with a few mates and have a go yourself!

We've also been given permission to put Bash the Fash online. Probably many of you have read this already, and if you have you'll know it's an important text so if you can donate a little something to KSL to help them continue and expand their work.

Very good pamphlet. One questions: what was the political background of the people who started it, before they got involved? How important was this as a reason to them for starting DIWU?

Quality allegations against Socialist Organiser - now known as the Alliance for Workers' Liberty...

Anarcho-syndicalists with links to and around DAM (Direct Action Movement, now SolFed) I believe. I'd think this was very important a reason behind it...

The 2 main initial organisers of DIWU were members of East London and Deptford DAM. Once it got going it attracted people from other backgrounds. Some DAM members got jobs in the industry but never as many as "Des Patchrider" wanted. Very few of the recruits came from other anarcho groups, but were people who saw the use of what DIWU was doing.

Regards,

Martin

This was good. If they put up another one then I'll throw some money their way next time I'm back.

We also now have online Bash the Fash - Anti-fascist recollections, 1984-1993 - thanks again to KSL and the author.
