Does anyone have any more details about what is going on with this? I signed the petition but I'd like to know more of the details. Is the U.S. thinking of declaring the EZLN a terrorist organization? Or was there a stupid LA Times editorial?
EZLN Petition
Yeah the Zapatistas came into existence in order to end the drudgery of petition politics. Or so I hope anyway. Perhaps we could use this occasion to note how the last 12 months have seen the most aggressive military manouevres by the Mexican army (now bankrolled by Washington of course) in the Lacadona since 1994.
Apparently the women's encuentro in December was good though.
Actually I wrote this petition ,Yes the U$ declared the EZLN a terror orginazation along time ago,
the goal of this would be to have enough people standing in solidarity with the ezln and the people of chiapas
that the u$ removes them from the list of terror orginazations and quits creating human rights violations.
Um, sorry but I have the current state department Designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations list and the EZLN is not on it.

I mean, people do travel freely to Mexico, take part in encuentros with Marcos present and return, aid still flows openly, and there are at least two immigrant based working class organizations that consider themselves part of La Otra
I don't think the zaps have ever made the list, which is why I did not sign the petition If they've been placed on some other list I'd like to see it.

Well, they probably give " tourism" or "academic research" or "visiting relatives" as the official reason for visiting, but i've seen photos of unmasked US radicals addressing encuentros with the familiar mask and pipe at the head table. My point is that none of this would be happening with the degree of openness it does happen with if the zaps were on official terrorist organization lists.
Yeah I agree, just wanted to clarify that getting into Zapatista territory is far from guarunteed. Plenty of times people have been turned away, deported, imprisoned etc. I have a couple of friends who went to the womens' encuentro in December, both Mexicans. There's some sort of way of getting permission, not sure of the details. I travelled through the Chiapan rainforest as a genuine tourist last month and it's no picnic with military checkpoints, bag revisions and general hassle off all sorts of state authorities...and I wasn't even that near Zap territory.

Please sign it to show your solidarity. Thanks
