flyposting crits?

Submitted by undefinedego on 24 February, 2007 - 19:31.

first post, i couldn't find a search option for the forums... is there one? im not sure if this is the right place to put this, so if its not could someone move it or something?

well here is what i am thinking of wheat pasting, i would like to hear all your criticisms and thoughts. i tried to make it as little demanding/specific as possible, less of a "do this and you will live in a nice world because nothing else works "thing. so yeah this is a work in progress at the moment and would still like to improve it, so don't shoot me down too hard. oh and i would also like to hear any of your thoughts on fly posting as a method of communication, i plan to post over bus stop advertisements.

individuality
you say we are style without substance, "mtv" grown kids. maybe your right, perhaps this current system has completely swept away our teenage angst, a once burning passion for change and replaced it with the empty soul of the corporate whore, feeding off of us like a parasite taking our money and substance and in return providing us with narcissism, insecurity, ignorance and a sheep like conformity. has our diversity been confined by those carefully designed leaders for the "mtv generation" to the clothes we wear and the possessions we buy? void of any real individuality.

you may find yourself asking, where has all the unique individual expression gone? from a distant perspective it would be a pretty reasonable assumption to believe that it is dead, never coming back and we don't need it. however if you were to escape living in your head and question almost anyone who has not completely sour come to the monotony of society about there individuality they would be quick to exert that they are unique. so what are we talking about? where is this individuality we place so much value on, surely we don't base who we are solely on the brand labels we buy.

locked away, deep under the many forms of oppression lays our true self. oppression not in the so easily recognizable form of chains, but the oppression that exists in what we blindly accept without question; in the store bought culture were money means individuality and respect and the many reinforcements of this echoed throughout our daily lives, from birth to death. this is reinforced in advertising and the many other subtle forms that are harder to recognize. this oppression becomes obvious when an individual differs from what is "allowed" and what is not by those who sway the majority. sure we are free to buy what we want but that is not freedom that is consumerism, surely you are capable of distinguishing between the two

do not fear our humanity and passion for greater things is not dead yet,the more it is oppressed the more it shall burn with desire. under lock and key there is the true self, the individual that desires for expression. we cannot be sterilized to a bland conforming majority, for as long as people exist our humanity can never be destroyed, it will always remain a part of us even if it lays dormant. in societies current form we rarely develops this desire in to true beauty and even when it does it is largely with in the confines of what is already accepted.

we are capable of creating a place for humans to live in, other than this cold mechanical society we have created suitable for machines, rats and bits of paper we have come we have come to worship. so if you are capable of seeing even a glimpse of true individuality inside yourself let it grow, express it in as many ways as possible and allow yourself to challenge the constraints placed upon you.

i think for flyposts you're best off going for something short and sweet more like that Nike one. Trouble with anti-consumerist stuff is that people take it personally, as an attack unless they're already believe the same things as you (and don't wear the forbidden brands of Nike etc.) I personally think that to get anarchist/antiauthoritarian ideas across it is better to go for structural problems.People wear nice clothes because they want to feel good about themselves, better to have a pop at some hated leader - Blair, or something undeniably shit - War, Unemployment, Poverty rather than their favourite hoodie. Just my two cents!

That nike one seems a bit harsh. I think cheeky/funny campains work best. A couple of ideads:
One thing we're thinking about doing with our local greenpeace group is where you go up to, say billboards, and just subtilly past something onto it in order to alter it slightly, so for example the nike slogan could say 'just do it- because we tell you to'. I like this type of campain because it's cheeky, funny and hits them where it hurts- their own advertising spaces. Another technique we've used succesfully is to go into the actual stores and stick something over the lables, we did this against asda making the labels look like reduced stickers- and they got furious saying it had a real impact upon sales. Only problem with these type of campains is that if you go into a store with the intention of putting of customers thats 'aggravated tresspass' and sticking lables on things is 'vandalism'. roll eyes

What's this about prostitution being a metaphor for "soul"lessness? You couldn't manage to say what you mean without dehumanizing sex workers along the way?

Unless it's changed in the last year or so, aggravated tresspass has to be in the open air.

it's changed in the last year or so

Shit, really?

Who/what were they aiming it at?

7 March, 2007 - 16:45

office occupations mostly i think. they used it on 'the George Fox 6'

i mean to be fair, there are far too many loopholes in the law, all sorts of leafletting and public disagreement isn't even a crime! just don't try and 'persuade someone not to do something they are entitled to do' or 'persuade someone to do something they are not obliged to do' or SOCPA will get you.

haha did you used to go hunt sabbing?

My best flypost was on a massive McDonald's billboard - i got the exactly right coloured card and made it say 'Meat is Murder' with really accurate writing, golden arches 'M's and everything. A few people I knew thought it was real and mentioned it to me without knowing i had done it, saying -'McDonalds have done a well wierd new billboard, it says 'meat is murder' confused ' It was up for about a week in a really prominent place as well, must've confused the fuck out of thousands of people cool
