Getting lots of money back from the bank (UK posters)

Submitted by Steven. on 17 August, 2007 - 10:03.

A lot of posters may know that the EU outlawed excessive bank charges for overdrafts and stuff 6 years ago. But they kept charging them.

So you can claim them back. It's really worth doing - it's free money that they have nicked off you.

My cousin did this and got £3,500 out of £4,200 charges back, my nephew got £1,500, my sis got £1,200. I only got £150, I must've been better with my money than I thought, but still it's money for nothing. DOit now!

Charges for what? I never understand this....

If you go over your overdraft limit, if a cheque of yours bounces, if there's not enough cash to cover an SO or direct debit. Then you get hit with £30-odd charges - legally charges have to be in line with the costs banks incur from them - but they're not, they're punitive and profiteering.

I got charged when my bank reduced my overdraft limit without telling me, so I was hundreds over the new, lower overdraft limit they'd suddenly decided I should have. Then they charged me for being over my overdraft limit. I'd just become a student so I applied for a student account which would give me a decent overdraft, and they said I couldn't have a new account because I'd gone over the limit of my last one. Then they offered me a £3,000 loan, bloody dicks (I did get the student account in the end).

I think I'll do this, thanks John. cool

My mum's been doing this. A couple of banks paid up, one decided to take it to court. She's awaiting that now. Because basically, there was the first court case which was a big deal as it was to see how it would stand up. And of course the bank won, so that's given all the other bank muhfukkas a lot more confidence.

thanks john, i'm well overdue to see the 'ethical bank' about their stupid charges.

...thing is i've done it about 5 times already. Still worth another shot.

Stinkerbell has written a couple of articles about this in a Now or Never!, including one in the most recent issue. I sold one to some bloke once, who approached me a few weeks later and told me that the paper I sold him helped him claim back over £500 in bank charges, so stuff like this is definately worth a try.

HSBC nailed me 50 quid each time into OD!

Heard that banks are starting to close customers accounts if they claim there money back as 'the relationship has broken down between bank and customer'. Still well worth it though.

Like it was a great "relationship" in the first place! grin (unequal much?? )

Yeah they did try this but the OFT ruled that as er.. a lil bit of a rubbish reason for closing someone's account (which it is! ) so the route they are going down now is to recoup this loss of income via other unfair methods ("low user" fees for credit card holders and annual fees etc and the like) . So yeah def. worth a try. And £50 is particularly steep. eek
