It was created to be the exact opposite of what it is.
The idea that the world's working class should trust a bunch of collegiate pseudo intellectual activists with their revolution - let a lone their hard earned dues money - is preposterous, farcical, given all we have learned from history. Gimme a break.

I take it you don't think unions can be a tool by which revolutions can be brought about? What other ways do you suggest we protect workers from management and capitalist greed? Perhaps corruption is part of human nature however in the IWW as far as I know there is no paid members and every member of a branch has an equal vote.

A thanks to everyone who has given me advice and information. To someone who has been politically thoughtful for a while, but has only just become interested in actual activist groups - it's all been very helpful.
To be honest, I can see plus points in both SolFed and the IWW, they each have characteristics and ideals that match my politics... and both seem to be very worthwhile organisations with much potential for growth and action... I can tell it's going to take a lot of thought before I make a decision on which one to go for. Not necessarily a bad thing. 
So once again, thanks to everyone for not only helping out but making me feel welcome - and if anyone has any other information on these groups/other groups they think I'd find useful, feel free to either post here or message me.

Resolution passed by San Francisco General Membership Branch of the IWW in February 2008.
Whereas X (aka X) has continuously harassed FW Heather Gardner and members of the SFBA GMB for the last year and a half by phone, email, voice mail and text message,
Whereas he has made explicit threats of violence against FW Oliver Lanti and has followed through on such threats in the past, punching FW Lanti in the face at a public event in September of 2006,
Whereas he has used threats spreading false accusations and lies to blackmail FW Gardner in order to get her to quit the IWW,
Whereas his behavior constitutes a pattern of harassment and is dangerous to both the union and its membership,
Whereas his behavior is clearly in violation of the principles of the IWW,
Therefore, be it resolved that X is not allowed to attend SFBA GMB events and the Grassroots House is encouraged to ban him from entering its premises,
Be it further resolved that X cannot re-join the SFBA GMB until his membership application is reviewed by the branch at a monthly business meeting,
Be it further resolved that no member of the SFBA GMB will discuss with X the internal affairs of the branch or any information about FWs Gardner or Lanti,
Be it further resolved that no member of the SFBA GMB will knowingly circulate accusations or rumors made by X about FWs Gardner or Lanti,
Be it further and finally resolved that this motion will be published on the IWW email list and that other bodies of the union are encouraged to pass a similar motion.
