The title says it all, can anyone give me modern examples of functioning Communes, "liberated" areas (such as how the Zapatistas claimed that the Mexican state of Chiapas was liberated from the Mexican state.) Occupied buildings(?) etc.
it's not very possible for a small group of people to just remove themselves from capitalism.
This is true. But I think intentional communities where every commodity is freely shared amongst and between everyone in said intentional community with no internal use of money. Would be a start.
Allthough they have degenerated now, some of the early Israeli kibutzim (especially the 'socialist' inspired) had a highly developed system of co-operative labour and communal living arrangements with only 'pocket money' provided for trips outside of their kibutz and were in terms of their internal arrangements quite inspirational - at the same time they were effectively the front line for colonisation of 'arab' lands and the expansion of the Zionist based state apparatus and in turn an outpost of western imperialism.
Get your brain round that set of contradictions.
In the heart of Tunisia. Thala: the occupied police station
Tepito: no thanks, first world
Does anyone know any accounts of the patrols by the Black Panthers?
And it's not exactly 'modern', but in anarchist Spain as well?

As far as occupied buildings go, there are thousands of squatted buildings all around the world, some are pretty large. There are plenty of intentional communities too. I don't think any of them are "liberated" in any meaningful sense of the word (and that goes for the Zapatistas as well) inasmuch as it's not very possible for a small group of people to just remove themselves from capitalism.
