Hi

This is interesting. Are the other staff coming out in support of their colleague? How are shoppers who ignore the pickets going to justify their actions?

Few directors read their email anyway, but I think the names and addresses of this comrade’s line management should be “leaked”.

As far as i know, mandate the union has not engaged in any strike action in support of joanne. Although Labour Youth linked to the Labour Party in Ireland will be holding a picket this friday in Dublin with mandate members in attendence and possibly joanne.

How about faxing or calling the branch at 1.00pm, is she going for re-instatement, what would she like in the way of support or even said from across the water?

Hi

Indeed. At face value this looks like a shocking act on the part of the Dunnes, I cannot understand how they hope to get away with it. Is there more to this than meets the eye?

Joanne is going for re-instatement and she and her union are calling for local support. As for support from 'across the water' and what they want/need we'll probably be in a better position to answer that after the Dublin support group is established whith Joannes involvement.

Are there any Dunnes branches in England, Scotland or Wales? Also the Labourstart email campaign is worthwhile and easy to do.

At present the Belfast and District Trades Union Council has come out in support of the call by Organise! to picket the Belfast city centre store tomorrow and have urged all their delegates to attend.

LR, this is a shocking act on the part of Dunnes but we really need someone with knowledge of southern Irish labour law to give an imput and let us know if they could have thought they had any basis for thinking they could get away with this.

Having said that its not always that important what the legal rights and wrongs are in a case. If southern labour courts are anything like Industrial Tribunals in the north they could well find in favour of Joanne order Dunnes to pay compensation and call on them to reinstate her. Reinstatement is not however compulsorary - and I've worked for bastards who have got rid of people (who they see as 'troublemakers') before on very dubious grounds in the hope that a) they won't go to tribunal and b) that if they do and win they'd rather pay the money than keep or take back the employee. Again there is a disclaimer here in that I have little knowledge of southern Irish labour law.

I do know that meetings with the company have been cancelled due to Joanne insisting on union representation at them - and that is illegal in Northern Ireland as it is in the rest of the UK. Could someone let us know what the score is in the Republic?

But the illustration that an employer/local management will go to lengths that you seem to find surprising still holds. And even if they don't get away with it if they don't reinstate Joanne they still get away with it. Thats why maximum solidarity and public pressure needs to be brought to bear - in solidarity with Joanne Delaney and in defence of the right of workers to organise.

Cheers;

Hi

And whilst I'm at it, here's Dunne's UK stores...

Should I break the link? I'll leave it to an admin's discretion.

No need to apologise, didn't think thats what you were trying to do at all. Your store tracker link is great - so how about it folks? Organising solidarity across Britain (and who knows maybe even Spain) would be a great boost to this campaign.

we have one dunnes store in the sainsburys retail park (read: quick eviction of picketers) in salford.

Problem is the time, friday 1pm, well at least for me, and especially since it is not an easily reachable place where we could have one of our famous "lunch time pickets" smile

But please do keep this therad updated on the details, we can definitely organise something here i'm sure even with just couple people.

If you have a leaflet text ready, that would be very helpful.

No probs- the text of the leaflet is on this thread and a picket does not need to be today but tom or next week

60+ attended the picket of Dunnes city centre store in Belfast called in support of Joanne Delaney by Organise! This was a great example of solidarity in action that should be built upon. We are now looking to contact the Dublin solidarity group as soon as its set up and meeting to set up a support group in Belfast.

Organise! were joined on the picket by rank and file trade union members from the T&G and Unison & others, Belfast and District Trades Union Council delegates and Northern Ireland Committee - Irish Trades Union Congress officials (which I think is the first time ever anything we've organised has been supported by NIC-ICTU officials). On the political side there were representatives from the CPI, IRSP, Sinn Fein, Socialist Party, SWP and I think the Workers Party. Cheers went up when the picket was joined by around 10 postal workers currently taking wildcat action in Belfast.

Planning for a mini 'international' day of action at every Dunnes store we can manage would seem an obvious next step for this campaign. If yer interested email Organise! at organiseireland@yahoo.ie

Cheers to everyone who turned up to support Joanne Delaney.

It´s having an Impact!

Organise! will be picketing the Dunnes stores city

centre branch near Corn Market in Belfast from 1.00pm

to 2.00pm this Friday (17th February) in support of

Joanne Delaney, a shop steward sacked for wearing her

union badge. We are calling on comrades and groups

join us in Belfast in raising awareness of Joanne's

case and her victimisation by Dunnes management.

This is the third picket of Dunnes in Belfast, a

picket also took place last week at the Park Centre

outlet.

. A special meeting of the Belfast and

District Trade Union Council is meeting in the Belfast

Unemployed Resource Centre on Lower Donegall Street at

7.30pm on Thursday 16th to discuss solidarity with

striking postal workers and Joanne. A Joanne Delaney

support group has also been set up in Dublin.

EDIT: although you already knew that if unlike me you had seen http://libcom.org/news/article.php?story=joanne-delaney-dunnes-240206&query=dunnes

Sounds like a victory:

Labourstart wrote:
on Monday morning this week, Joanne returned to work.

According to her union, "This victory for trade union rights followed a short but

highly effective campaign for her reinstatement by trade unionists, political groups

and community activists throughout Ireland and by many more supporters from around

the world who emailed the company through the LabourStart website."

The union adds:

"Mandate wishes to place on record our sincere appreciation for the support received

from all those who joined with Joanne and Mandate to campaign for her right to work

and to wear her union badge without fear of victimisation. Your solidarity has won

the day and we salute the courageous stand taken by Joanne who has become an

inspiration to all those associated with the campaign."
