sick ins, was "tips for call centre organizing"
Outbreaks of 'flu, throat bugs and viral-related stomach bugs are ten-a-penny in all the call centres I've worked in too...
call centres aside has anyone had much first hand experience with sick ins in a workplace that isn't union certified??? I've heard a lot of people talk about sick ins, but I just have some difficulty seeing it work in an unorganized workplace, mainly because most non-union workplaces I've worked at had un-official punishments (like having schedules drastically reduced, etc.) for people who phoned in sick more than once a year or so and also required doctors notes based on management's whims.
Well yeah we had one over the football a while back, we were given a two hour break to watch one of the england games, but we weren;t allowed to drink heavily. So sure enogh we made sure that everyone came back at least a bit tipsy so they couldn't target anyone specifically. Never seen a mass sick in though.
Days of 'not working' (effectively a sick-in) happen in the public sector in Turkey where strikes are illegal.
The one day quitting work event which KESK (Public Worker Unions Confederation) has been talking about since the outrageous "mass negotiations" which took place during the summer, finally took place on 14th of December in many places of Turkey with a quite high participation despite the fact that the event was made definite very late and announced unwillingly by the union.Participation to demonstrations which happened in many places Turkey was high despite the unwilling attitude of the union. Despite they have been talking about it since the summer, the union bureaucrats announced started announcing the one day quitting work event in 5th of December, only nine days before the date of the action itself. In Ankara, during the demonstration which over 1500 workers attended, there were some quarrels with the police but there weren't any clashes. In Istanbul, over 3000 teacher, postman and health and transportation workers were on the streets. 3500 public workers who attended the demonstration in Izmir said "Long live class solidarity". 4000 workers attended the demonstrations in Izmit, in Mersin the number was 3000, in Adana 750, in Zonguldak, Kırklareli and Malatya 700, in Antakya and Aliaga 500, in Trabzon 300. It is thought that 40,000 workers attended the demonstrations countrywide and 250,000 public workers stopped working for one day in hospitals, schools and government offices.

I was in an education programme for unemployed where a very unorganized (but vast in numbers) sick-in took place. It had no connection to any issue on the programme as such but depended on the fact that we in the kitchen class was not allowed to see the world cup games. So almost everybody called in sick on Swedens first game. This resulted in a threat that we would be cut from the education if we also called in sick for the second game. I think I wrote something short about it in the Lernia text.
On another level I was at a bakery where we refused to do some work and claimed it was a health risk to it - these forms of actions is far more common I guess.
