Got bored tonight, you can print this image out on sticker sheets and paste them into copies of atlas shrugged, or any other neo-liberalism piece of propaganda.

It's a novel by Ayn Rand.
spoiler alert

All the principled hard-nosed capitalists go on strike and live in this little uber-free-market utopia leaving the liberals and philanthropists to run things. It's the kind of thing American Libertarians/anarcho-capitalists wet their pants over.

TBH if I was going to go buy it, that sticker would probably seal it for me.

If you were going to do this sort of thing, wouldn't it make more sense to put stickers in the Chomsky book directing people to organisations etc?

How many people are going to pick up an Ayn Rand book, see that sticker and think 'oh yeah, this is blatant neo-liberal propaganda, best become a left anarchist instead'?

Stickers in books is not such a bad idea....

It's not supposed to convert anybody to leftism, just supposed to let them know that it is an extremely biased book. Everyone who reads this seems to think they are an expert in economics, and almost every american highschool student is required to read it. Over here it's considered a 'classic'. So if anybody is interested in expanding their socio/economic knowledge, they might just look at Noam Chomsky's book...to 'expand' themselves.

At least that was the idea.

Hmm,

That actually makes some sense. Have you considered being a bit more guarded with your use of thr truth though? Maybe even lying a little bit?

How's about:-

"liked this book - see other books in our modern social classics series... Profits Over People, Noam Chomsky" something like that, particularly if you made the sticker look like the publisher meant it to be there.

Telling someone they are reading propaganda generally isn't an effective way to get people to do what you want them to do.

Leaflets for your organisation into left-wing political texts is always a good one as it's very targetted advertising, and free. It's just difficult to do a big batch of books without getting noticed.

That cartoonist is from Edmonton, his sister is running for the provincial parliament next election in my neighbourhood.

Also their dad was a famous social democrat who won an election in rural northern alberta, that's like an old style 60's social democrat winning a seat in Alabama. Those cats are like a lefty dynasty out here. It's pretty funny you referenced that comic artist, which is actually quite good.

Fair enough, I wasn't aware of that context. The only people who'd pick it up in the UK would already be into Rand's ideas I think.

In any case, I'd use different language, politely informing the reader there are other ideas out there - possibly directing to something like Steve Keen's Debunking Economics, which does a good job in demolishing neo-classical economics in a readable reasoned form.

Really? eek That's fucked up.

Isn't Atlas Shrugged the Rand book with the rape scene described in an approving manner?

I doubt this chap would even waste his own time pasting these stickers in books, but it's always great when people put something up hoping other people will do it for them. Petitioning the ruling class, or the neo-liberalismists as you might put it, is the job of NGO's and liberals.

I had to read Anthem in high school, as did almost everyone I knew (in the southern U.S.). I think the sticker idea is great; there are a lot of folks I knew as a kid who probably went on to read more of her stuff and be influenced by her because they thought she was cool for being antigovernmentish. They didn't know any better.

As far as I know, what I said was true.
Every highschool I've ever been to has made it required summer reading for the soon-to-be seniors. My friends' schools have done the same.

the US is a big place, and one neighborhood isn't the whole country. i've taught in three high schools and went to another one, and nowhere has anything by ayn rand been on the curriculum, which is a good thing. shakespeare, and the loathesome catcher in the rye, but not ayn rand.

No, you're thinking Fountainhead, which I actually enjoyed reading.

Ayn Rand does have a pretty fucked up view of sex, but that is mainly due to her warped Nietzscheian streak.

The Fountainhead was required reading when I was in high school (in Canada).

She's a pretty prolific lady; but my favorite has text of hers has to be 'The New Left.' It is priceless stuff, really great, stunning even.

“...virtually the entire program of 'The Communist Manifesto' has been enacted into law in this country.”

Classic.

'2112' by Rush is based on the work of Rand, there has never been a more convincing denunciation of socialism than 'The Trees'.

You could have a sticker in a library book saying "this book was donated your local anarchist group" along with contact details...

Really?? eek

I didn't know anyone would even know any Rush on lc tbh.. tongue

" The Trees" is an amazing track...didn't know it was meant to be a denunciation of socialism tho..so much as a warning against in-fighting which detracts totally from the main goal..or is that what you meant i.e saying that is what socialists do as depicted in the song?

Love

As is Chomsky's. Books are obviously biased towards the perspective of their authors. Chomsky is as much an agent of “neo-liberalism” as Rand, but at least she doesn’t attempt to pretend otherwise.
