Any comments on this? Is it basically another go at what was tried in New Zealand, is UNITE in Australia the same organisation, or a sister group? What other bases of suppport do they have?

Don't know anything about UNITE in Oz but there is no Socialist Party of Australia anymore. There was one from 71 to about 91. The SPA split from the Communist Party of Australia - they were the hardline tankie union hacks who were opposed to the Eurocommunist/New Left direction of the party. When the CPA dissolved itself in the early 90s the SPA grabbed the name. They still have a few important union officials I believe.
There is however a Socialist Party here which is the local franchise of the UK's Militant Tendency who are now also called The Socialist Party I believe.

Its a different group, inspired by the original NZ Unite. AFAIK its mostly being driven by one of the smaller socialist groupings, I think the Socialist Party of Australia? I think its also mostly (only?) in Melbourne at the moment.
Maybe one of the Aussies could do a better job at explaining than me though...
