Hello,

I thought this would be of interest to you all.

Maximise Your Activist Publicity In Bristol

1.) The Internet / Email Is Not A Magic Wand

2.) Make Use Of All Inclusive Internet Outlets

1.) THE INTERNET / EMAIL IS NOT A MAGIC WAND

The internet / email is not a magic wand. In reality it is little different to snail mail in terms of how long it takes people to read all their mail. If you email an event, or post an event to an internet calendar, a day or two before the event, then only a small percentage of people will have read about your event by the time it has taken place!

Think about it! Do you read every item of mail the moment it enters your inbox? After 3 days only around 50% of people have read all their mail. It takes at least a full week for the overwhelming majority of people to read all their mail. Think about those people who only visit an internet café once a week. Many people simply don't have time to check their mail, or the internet, everyday.

ALSO: Always remember to check that you have included the date, time and venue (meaning a proper address) in your publicity. It is depressing how many people don't check that they have provided this most basic of information (or bizarrely, don't even think they need to provide proper address details!).

2.) MAKE USE OF ALL INCLUSIVE INTERNET OUTLETS

Bristol Indymedia, Bristol Social Forum, and Bristol Activists are inclusive outlets which accept posts of a community / anarchist / socialist nature. While Bristol Indymedia is intended to accept posts of a Bristol / South West relevance, Bristol Social Forum and Bristol Activists accept national mail, as long as you are from the Bristol / South West area.

If you care about your campaign it is up to you to make the effort to post it as widely as possible, as coherently as possible, as and far in advance as possible. Posting a slap dash post to an e-group or website just hours before the event, indicates only that the campaign isn't that much cared about by the campaigners themselves! Think about it!

Thanks.

........................................................................

The Bristol Social Forum was launched on 30th April 2005. In that time our egroup has grown into a large and successful outlet for activist and community news around Bristol, as well as regionally and Nationally too.

Recent posts have included protests against First Bus (family fares are equivalent to taxi prices!), transport to an international festival in Paris, to the ever popular Bristol Indymedia film nights, providing a platform to a wide range of local activist groups.

This is an invitation to join the egroup, and to receive news of events from group members. As a subscriber you will receive a maximum of 2 digests each week, with messages automatically compiled into a more digestable format.

BRIEF BACKGROUND:

On 30th April 2005 Bristol activists from diverse political backgrounds organised to launch a Bristol Social Forum. Inspired by the World and European Social Forums, and bonded by the belief in people over profit, local social forums now exist around the world.

The Bristol Social Forum aims to be a place where people can communicate and learn from each other. Its purpose is to make links between groups and between individuals, in the belief that getting together is vital for effective campaigning and local action.

The 4th European Social Forum will be taking place in Athens-Greece from the 4th - 7th of May 2006. Tens of thousands of activists participated in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd European Social Forums which took place in Florence (2002), Paris (2003) and London (2004).
