Stewards

does anyone remember who the stewards were employed by on the gleneagles demo? I remember them saying to the march that those involved in confrontations with the fence/old bill were 'not part of the demonstration', who were these muppets who had divine right to say who was and who was not a demonstrator and wasnt it funny that they soon had no control what so ever over the demo as more and more people joined the more raucus elements of the demo in hurling abuse/fencing at the police.

The photos I've seen have got most of the Globalise Resistance folk from Glasgow wearing the bibs. One guy sending out the emails (definitely SWP) changed his mail sig to "Chief Steward", which amused me a lot.

They were kindof trying to take credit for organising legal observers and medics too but I don't think anyone took that seriously.

Stewards for the Gleneagles demo were organised by G8Alternatives. There were, therefore, a significant number of SSP members. There were also a contingent of members of the Fire Brigades Union. There were also a fair number of non-SSP people I was aware of, including at the point where the fence was breached on the road, at which point I remember seeing the chief steward looking particularly perplexed and not-fully-in-charge!

I can't say i heard any of the stewards saying that the naughty people were not part of the demo, but clearly there was a definate discomfort amongst the stewards and not a great deal of cohesion either!

UNISON did not support the Gleneagles demo, so their stewards were only on the MPH. red n black star
